Mike the track on the So. side of the monument is for horse racing, our future proposed airport is just south of the turnoff to Rancho Leanero between the hiway and La CAPPILLA but no money to build it, but now that Bobby Jr. is a deputado for this area maybe some thing will happen-------

Mike the only one I know who has landed there is a friend who used to fly a gyro-copter, I don't believe any airplanes have landed there. The property is owned by the Geraldos next time I see one of them I will ask them.

I thought there was an abandoned airstrip on Rancho Leonero. Is that what you are talking about?

no, but yes there used to be a good

strip at rancho leonero . but a hurricane did major damage to it in i think 1989 or 1990 or so, might have been "Gilberto", anyway the owners decided not to fix it, too much $$$ and they then felt the majority of biz they should cater to would be from the jet port at SJdeC, so all new marketing plan that said there are way more fishermen than private flyers, so we don't need our own strip....too bad, I think John Ireland is missing at least part of the boat...ifm you will! And i tell him so each time i see him at the boat shows Fred Hall et al. When i last stayed at RL it was to dive tthe Pulmo reefs in 1990 and we landed at Palmas de Cortez when the street in front of the hotel WAS the Pista tambien!!

then some bone head landing hit a truck and for liability etc. Van Wormer said no mas aviones pequenas aqui!:fire::?::(

funny I heard a different story. I heard that the owners went over to the strip one day only to find it guarded by Mex military. Rather than deal with whatever was going on, they closed it. that is strictly "as the palapa turns" info.

The true story of the Palmas airstrip closing is part of what "bajajudy" said!!
Mexican laws changed, outlawing ALL dirt strips, that would NOT conform to the NEW GOVT regulations.
This is due to drug smuggling.
This is why the strip closed.
The Owners had plans to put "Timeshare condos" on this private property.
Presently, these condos are now under construction.
