Time to Thank Baja Nomads for the NEW BOOK, + introduction, reviews, & a look inside!
The new book is a Baja Nomad Production...
Baja California Land of Missions is the result of a lifetime of Baja California affection, appreciation of seeing historic sites,
many years of study, the past three years of specific researching, and the last year putting it down in words and editing. Inspiration to do the work
and support for getting it done comes from the Baja Nomads!
Time to say "thank you" to the many Baja Nomads who contributed their inspiration, photographs, editing thoughts and suggestions to my new book.
Doug Means, ‘BajaNomad’, who created and maintains this forum that provides a connection between us Baja fans.
Writing Support:
‘John M’ for amazing support in copy editing, proof reading, and literary suggestions.
‘drpsp71’ (Dr. Penny) for her professional copy editing help in the early stages of the book’s beginning.
‘TacoFeliz’ for a wonderful cover creation for the book (front and back).
‘Graham’ for checking the manuscript and writing a nice review.
‘GregN’ for his input and writing a review.
‘Osprey’ for his very nice review.
Photographic Contributions:
‘Jack Swords’ for his many mission photographs.
‘BajaOkie’ for his mission photographs.
‘academicanarchist’ for his mission photographs.
‘Neal Johns’ for his El Camino Real photograph.
‘güéribo’ for her mission photograph.
‘XRPhlang’ for his visita photograph.
‘CG’ for his mission photograph.
‘TMW’ for his visita photograph.
Thanks also go to many more Nomads on this forum who have inspired me to find the truth out there and shown me there is a lot of interest in what
happened in Baja and what motivated so much work to be performed, so long ago.
Baja California Land of Missions is 240 pages of historical stories about the people and places where Spain attempted to colonize the
peninsula of California. The book includes details, combined with maps and photographs, along with historic drawings of events, people, and places.
The padres who were documented at the twenty-seven missions are listed as well as the benefactors who contributed to the building of the first
seventeen missions. The GPS waypoints for all the mission sites are provided along with directions and kilometer markers.
Upon its scheduled release (Feb. 22, 2016), the book is available from the publisher www.oldmissions.com or soon from your favorite Baja book distributor and mission gift shops. See more of it on Facebook at http://facebook.com/oldmissions. An ad for the book will be placed in the Nomad Classified Ads forum once I pick them up from the printer.

Review by ‘Osprey’
Baja California Land of Missions
As a writer and a 20-year full-time resident of Baja California Sur I’ve had a chance to become acquainted with the author and his life-long love
affair with the peninsula and its missions. It was that unflagging love of adventure and travel that caused him to amass an amazing library of current
and historical documents about the peninsula and the missions which he shares with uncountable numbers of Bajaphiles through affinity forums and
social media groups.
Baja California Land of Missions is a unique and handy summary of existing data about a place and time which defies examination and
description; some of the planet’s harshest landscapes where alone a few hardy souls dared to challenge and rare crumbling 300-hundred-year-old
manuscripts which tell a garbled tale of daunting travel in the new world.
The book chronicles the missions on the peninsula. Readers will learn more about the missionaries, the storied Camino Real, the process, the setbacks,
the suffering and those who plan to travel the mission chain will feel the centuries slipping away with the guide book in hand. It will surely become
the Vade Mecum of this historical and archeological museum; the 800 miles of stunning cathedrals and relic ruin foundations that lured Mr. Kier and so
many others to take the path rarely chosen.
David’s friends and followers will buy two copies: one for the car, jeep, backpack, saddlebag and another for their home library where it will be
safe, protected and cherished so it can become the perfect gift one day for their kids and grandkids – history books are rarely complete as new
findings become available but this book is truly an heirloom edition because so little evidence remains to be uncovered. The book may hold its
historical certitude and relevance for many decades to come. Don’t miss this one.

Review by ‘Graham’
“With his great passion for Baja California history, especially its mission history, author David Kier is well qualified to write a concise yet
comprehensive guide to the missions founded on the peninsula by the Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican Orders. This handsome and handy volume
represents a fine attempt to achieve that goal, provoke discussion, and place the Baja missions in a broader historical and geographical context.”

Review by ‘GregN’
I have written two books and numerous articles about Baja and wish this book was available when I was doing my research. Inveterate Baja buff David
Kier has created the consummate guide to the historic missions of Baja California. He explains and/or dispels long-established rumors and guesswork
about the missions and the dedicated padres who established them. The fine maps and photos help make this book an easy to digest reference guide.

The list price of the book will (for now) include sales tax and shipping charges! Thank You Nomads!
The book was designed as a chronological history story of the events related to the establishment of the missions on the peninsula, from 1535 to 1855,
using the details as provided by those who lived during those years, whenever possible. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Congratulations David! I know this will be good.....judging from the years of reading your postings here at the BN. Ordering a book next week.
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Thank you, Deno!
JZ, did you mean you pre-ordered one?
The printers told me they will be ready on Monday or sooner, and since I don't have them yet, I hope it will be tomorrow. I will pick them up and Max
has the envelopes waiting to mail off the first orders as soon as we have the books.
Discover Baja Travel Club will also be getting their first order for those of you who want to get it immediately or look it over. Members will get a
discount and they do sell books to non-members at the list price.
When I actually have the books, I will put an ad here on Nomad for them. This thread was my 'thank you' for all the Nomads who helped with creating
Baja California Land of Missions.

Thank you for the order!
I just called the printers... at 9:53 am. today was their estimate of when it would be done...
The books are still at the binders as of this morning. The book is being done as a perfect bound book, and that takes a little longer than if it was
spiral bound.
SOON!!

Thanks, Ken,
There are already orders in for 87 books... 7 of which from the website since Saturday.
I should also ask if anyone would like their copy signed, send me an email, oldmissions at gmail.com or just bring their copy to my PowerPoint slide
show in San Diego coming up in the next couple of months.

Picked up the first order of books today from the printers...

Here are a couple at my home against an Hugo Lopez painting, above the fireplace.
I delivered twenty copies to Discover Baja Travel Club at 4 pm today, so they have them.
This concludes my thank you post to the many Nomads who participated in this project. I will now place an ad for them on the Nomad Classified ads
forum.
Thank you for your interest in the new book!
