Stay on the west side with hwy 1.
There are more gringo travelers over there to keep you company. No Xray at Tecate.
and remember lots of lonely stretches on this new road.

on the downside, there will be a ton of truck traffic rumbling up and down the road, yup jake brakes all night long. the price of progress I suppose

X-ray machines at all crossings except Tecate. We got examined at Mexicali East last week. It's the new normal I suppose. |
I didn't see an X-ray at southbound Mexicali west but maybe I missed it.

Point bein', SOMEBODY has been vehemently denying the road won't be done for at least a couple of years.
I'll also point out the other elephant; Mexicano road engineering. Another 5 years, rockslides, storms, potholes, poor asphalt quality; but truly
that's why I love it all so. That's what makes Baja, BAJA. For us non-SoCal's from the east, this makes Baja a day shorter drive. Time will tell
on use/abuse/more traffic that will inexorably take its' toll on the Peninsula.
Recently on another thread someone mentioned in an aside that the days of us 'trailer-trash' Baja campers are fading; now it's www., cellphones,
satellite TV, so us Baja Snowbirds who used to haul water and stand in line for the phone booth are now dinosaurs. Ouch. Wish I could afford a B
& B and do the capitalist gig instead of just commune and catch my dinner.

There will still be plenty that travel the west side down 1, and people that travel down the new road; depends where you are coming from. I will miss
some of the great restaurants and hotels on the Pacific side...It will be interesting to see the progress!

Pacifico, I agree half-heartedly on your post. I will not miss the Santo Tomas hill...... won't miss the San Quintin bus crunch (any time of day)...
won't even miss the hog-backs south of El Rosario. Will miss Cataviņa bigtime, but a minor detour north for a half-day fix. WILL look forward to
maybe a night in the greatest forest of them all, the Bahia LA turn-off area..... much area to find boondock camps, wonderful minor biosphere! Won't
miss the Ensenada Ka-Thump.. Ka-Thump.. Ka-Thump..... 90 minutes to go 20 miles through knuckle-biting traffic and a sore neck at the end.
It will be interesting to see ''the progress''. Many years of watching 'progress' is not always heartening. However, progress will bring new
restaurants and growth down the new corridor. Question is, where it will 'progress' to. Ain't it a biatch life goes on (as George Harrison said)

I for one am ecstatic that the new road will be done THIS YEAR. Just wish it was 5 years ago; would've saved me a weld-job.....

Having been driving down & back Mex 1 for over 25 years, I've seen the traffic count continuously increasing over the years from when I began. I
remember the delays in construction. I remember the times we've stopped and waited for the vado's to clear of running 'rivers', before we could
proceed. I remember the one time stupidity was driving rather than good sense. A 3/4 ton 4X4 gmc pickup loaded with plywood & 2X4's,waiting with
many "locals" and tourists for the water to lower. Ahuge tall tired farm tractor pulling cars and pickups through that 'couldn't wait'. Then a
freight truck came up going south. Proceeding slowly through and water was maybe 16" high. Brainless here,says 'he made it o.k. let's do it". So
off we crawled. Inches at a time as it kept getting deeper and deeper. Then I noticed the water boiling over the running board and climbing the
door. Committed, and of way too much good faith, we made it through to the other side. People looked at us in amazement. Not once was there any
feeling of sliding sideways. But it was the combination of loaded to the 'hilt' with plywood & 2X4's and of course, the 'higher power' that
watches us all in our 'stupid' times. I imagine the difference between the two routes will move a ton of traffic over to 5. I could be wrong. I sure
as heck would hate to see all the freight trucks take over 5. Oh well. As almost everyone says, being in Baja is an adventure. Life continues
regardless of which path you choose. Viva La Baja!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wiilardguy has it right. One reason the road is being built is to bring truck traffic up 5 instead of 1. Today traffic is light...next year?

My recollection of the "elephant's" posts were simply that he was pointing out the pace of progress in the past. His extrapolations were based on
that. Now comes this rather recent influx of workers and machinery.
And, besides, he isn't "wrong", nor the OP "right" until it is complete and we look at the calendar.
In the meantime, there is the cusp of an El Nino monsoon season in between now and Dec 31, 2016. A lot can still happen that man nor machine can
control.

How true, but sometimes the elephant is very insistent he is correct even when it is based on 10 year old observations. I posted what the head of
the project is saying, and I agree with you, a number of things could delay it..budget, weather etc. Enough weather and our elephant would have
had a memory like a...a well "elephant".

Nothing I said is incorrect or needs to be altered. The rate of construction has seemed to step up... but will it be done in 9 months or 1 year and 9
months...? That would be a PREDICTION, much like the climate and sea level alarmists like to use! So far their predictions are WRONG. How the highway
advances is yet to be seen.
There are still 50 miles of unstarted new highway to build between San Felipe and Puertecitos for the project to be completed. The current roadbed
north of Puertecitos was built in 1982 and paved the first time about 10 yeas after... so thin it was mostly gone by 1999. Repaved in the mid 2000s...
but still not a high speed road like the rest of Mexico 5. |
David, You did not have to bring in the sea level as a distracter did you? and then if that is not enough , you now are saying it has to include
the new road between San Felipe and Puertecitos. Another herring. I think everyone knows what we have been talking about.
