dead sea turtles , san juanico( scorpion bay)
We are camping in San Juanico, Baja Sur, aka scorpion bay, and are curious to why there are so many dead sea turtles washing up around the points and
the beach down the way ??

The local fishermen may have a good answer...
Sometimes animals just die, and do wash ashore. One trip to Shell Island we counted like 6 dead porpoises, more than I had ever seen on a trip. One
dead porpoise or a dead whale has occasionally been on that beach... one time for a whale.

The local fishermen may have a very good answer, indeed:

Those dead porpoises didn´t just die. They where killed by the scumbags illegaly netting the totuava for their bladders .

There's no totoaba on the Pacific side, by San Juanico.
A couple of years ago, I saw several dead turtles on the beaches in Punta Chivato. I don't know what caused it, but remember there were newspaper
articles about it in the local papers at the time. Maybe red tide, or something like that?

Just north of Gonzaga there are times I have see lot's of dead sea life washed ashore. I have always thought it was due to illegal netting as there
are tons of nets around the islands.
Good news is I just recently got back from there a few weeks ago and seen lot's of turtles while kayak fishing. Easily the most I have ever seen
there.

Well after seeing football field sized nets in every boat on the beach my questions are answered. All sorts of marine life is washing up. Sad !! not
going to be any fish left, nor other species in the next decade if this continues.

I hate to beat this post to death, but wifey and I walked from the top of 6th point all the way down past the pongas.........so many huge "new dead"
turtles we had to stop the walk,,I honestly would estimate the total near 40,,,,,,absolutely one of the saddest things we have ever seen....I know its
not the USA, but it is 2018 and this is different than killing whales, dolphins or ?? Just disgraceful , come on Mexico

With 7+ BILLION mouths to feed the Earth is being abused. No amount of shaming posts will change a thing. The only tragedy is that humans continue to
waste their by-catch and let it rot.
We are all responsible as mouth breathing humans. Own it......

If the issue s abusive fishing practices then put the blame where it belongs.

Well, our trip has come to an end here in San Juanico, time to get back for kids school to start. An amazing beach and town, but the death of over 40
sea turtles will always stick in our minds on how man will all but destroy nature. Wildcoast.org was contacted, but as far as we know nothing was done
except the constant spam emails asking to donate money to them,,,,,,,very sad state of affairs as these beautiful creatures could boost tourism here
if they were protected, instead they are still hunted,,,,,Good luck my tortuga friends, may God help you.
