type of car and camping
I am planing about a two week camping vacation in Baja, Dec 22-Jan3. I was wondering what kind of car I should take. I have a Honda Accord that is
very reliable. Will this be a suitable car to get to good campsites. Will I be able to drive on some dirt roads, or do the dirt roads require high
clearance?
Also, if anyone can pass along some info on good campsites and campsites to AVIOD, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
steve

Welcome to Baja Nomad Steve. Camp sites I have stayed at (I often camp out in the desert or on beaches, far from civilization) include: El Palomar in
Santo Tomas, Posada Don Diego in Col. Vicente Guerrero, Cielito Lindo & Gypsy's south of San Quintin, Nuevo Mazatlan (Km. 32) south of San Felipe,
Camp Gecko on Bahia de los Angeles.
In southern Baja good things are said about The Malarrimo RV Park in Guerrero Negro, camping in the oasis at San Ignacio, Camacho's at San Lucas Cove
south of Santa Rosalia, Santispac and El Requeson on Bahia Concepcion, Los Airipes just before La Paz (I stayed here in 1985)...
As for car... reliable with good tires. An SUV or truck is best and 4WD would be top choice if you want to explore Baja!

It really depends on how far your going and what you would like to see. Also what are you sleeping in? Most graded dirt roads would be fine but don't
wander to far from them some roads get bad quick. Any whereyou go will be an adventure.
Mick.
Getting there is ALL the fun!
Ok being here is fun to

Your Honda Accord will work just fine. Most of the campgrounds have good graded dirt roads or driveways to them. Highway I is a piece of cake for your
car and your fuel economy will be a blessing. High ground clearance is nice if you want to get off the beaten path, but for your first time down the
pinnensula there will be lots and lots to see that your car will get you to without problem. If the going gets rough on a dirt road and you start to
scrape bottom, just turn around and go somewhere else. How many times have I been in the boonies in my 4X4 feeling muy macho only to see a family of
locals drive by in a Nissan sedan? Make sure your tires are in good shape and go for it. My favorite campground is Brisa Del Mar just west of San Jose
Del Cabo on the beach. The area has urbanized (to put it mildly) over the years, but the beach is still beautiful.

if you do hit a dirt road go slow.about 10 years ago, in the central coastal region I passed a lowered ford Escort(like the street racers in too fast,
too furious) with a board strapped on top. low profile tires, etc.) I was amazed he made it that far but he was going nice and slow.Bring gear to jack
your vehicle up and dig out.
