Who has been to Morocco? Any good recommendations?

Wife and I are going to Spain and France for two to three weeks soon. We are thinking about doing a side trip for a few days to Morocco.

Any one have suggestions?

My wife and I were there 2 years ago. My favorite places were Chefchaouen (the blue city) in the Rif mountains, Fez, and Tangiers. Casablanca was a tourist trap. Rabat on the Atlantic was cool as was Tetuan on the Med.

We wanted to check out Marrakech but it was shut down due to the big earthquake they had.

We hopped over from Spain on a puddle jumper, we didn't want to waste time with the ferries.

Went to Morocco with my wife a few years ago. Stayed in Marrakesh for a few days and thenover the mountains to the Sahara desert. Wonderful people and very tolerant of foreigners. Do not miss going through the Medina where all the small stalls are. It leads into a large square that is called Jemaa El-Fna. During the day it is a giant market that transforms into a giant outdoor restaurant and entertainment center. If you buy something in the Souks in the Medina, be prepared to bargain.

What cities did you fly in and out of? We will be in Barcelona.

JZ, you make such beautiful photos!
This one inspires me to post the lyrics of the song Marrakesh Express
Brings back memories of my trip there in the 1990s.

'Marrakesh Express' by Crosby, Stills, and Nash...

Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes
Travelling the train through clear Moroccan skies
Ducks and pigs and chickens call
Animal carpet wall-to-wall
American ladies five-foot tall in blue

Sweeping cobwebs from the edges of my mind
Had to get away to see what we could find
Hope the days that lie ahead
Bring us back to where they've led
Listen not to what's been said to you

Would you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express?
Would you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express?
They're taking me to Marrakesh
All aboard the train, all aboard the train

I've been saving all my money just to take you there
I smell the garden in your hair

Take the train from Casablanca going south
Blowing smoke rings from the corners of my mouth my mouth, my mouth
Colored cottons hang in the air
Charming cobras in the square
Striped djellebas we can wear at home
Well, let me hear ya now

Would you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express?
Would you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express?
They're taking me to Marrakesh
Would you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express?
Would you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express?
They're taking me to Marrakesh

All on board the train
All on board the train
All on board
