For records of a major hurricane direct hits from Pacific into Bahia Magdelena and nothing but, never say never

Hurricane Jimena (2009): Jimena peaked as a Category 4 storm in the Pacific but rapidly collapsed due to cooler waters. It made landfall in the Bahía Magdalena region only as a Category 1 hurricane, though it still brought severe flooding to the area.

My friends in San Juanico are certainly preparing. Over the past couple of weeks there's already been a LOT of rain and some of the low-lying dirt roads are still flooded. Securing roofs and belongings is going on for the last few days.

This is gonna be rough for that area!

They were also preparing for the start of lobster season, which is probably going to get pushed out because of this.

I've got a trailer there that I hope stays upright!

The above images were from Puerto López Mateos in the aftermath of Jimena, when numerous structures were flattened, including major damage to the cannery.

I guess if AI doesn't consider that path a "direct hit", then it didn't happen.

Yup. No worries. Tropical storm winds and above are quite capable of taking down tin, stick and plywood structures.

Seems it is tracking even farther north now. Good for some bad for others.
Its rainy in Valle de Guadalupe right now.

Desert will be greening up more and pitayas getting plump.

Windy rain forecast model

It looks like San Juanico is going to get a direct hit! the storm is coming in on a full moon, which usually means higher than average tides.

The low road is probably doomed, and there are plenty of spots on the high road that could easily wash out!

True.

It will be interesting to see how the shelters erected during this recovery project from Jimena, stand up to what's coming down the line today. Assuming those buildings are still in use...

First login in ages. I just came to wish everyone a healthy and safe hurricane. I've traveled both coasts on motorcycles north/south and from eastern to western coasts. San Juanico was a completely random discovery for me. I remember the damages from previous hurricanes and know there will be challenges. Best to y'all.

in Puerto San Carlos. The water is normally 3 feet under the footbridge to the floating docks on the terminus where tourists are loaded onto boats.

Surge, winds and tides are noticeable. Lots of trees being blown over.

Word from Mulege: Polo seems to have blown a lot of the rain out when it hit the Pacific side, and flooding down the Cortez side may have coincided with low tide so that overflow was a LOT less than expected. Lots of clean up, no reports so far of disaster. Good news comparatively speaking for the east side of the penninsula

More word from Mulege:

We did not get flooded in La Fortuna! River came up to just below floor level of the casas closest to the estuary.

Also hearing no serious flood problem across the river in the Orchards.

Power was proactively cut and may still be out.

Any news about the San Juanico area?

I love all the routes to San Juanico, and look forward to exploring the back roads around there again on my next Baja run.

I haven't found anything about the damage there, or to the roads leading there. Anybody have any on the scene info?
