Starlink vs Amazon Leo
Looks like Amazon Leo is coming very soon. Will be great to have an alternative to Starlink, especially after Musk went all political, and joined the
dark side.
Anybody tried the Leo beta units yet?
Woke!
Hands off!

Apparently not available til 2028, but definitely good to have competing options to choose from again.

Have Starlink on my truck. It's a mini we can take out of it's case and take on international trips.
LEO satellite systems are incredible.

From the little bit I read about LEO is it's designed for standard smart cell phones. Is it already available in Internet form? I do know Starlink
when we first got it was a huge improvement over Hughesnet which tended to fall off line a lot and was far slower(and more expensive as well)

When I joined my erstwhile employer Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the research fleet relied primarily upon Iridium satellites, late 80s technology that never quite scaled to
meet the demands of image and audio data collected by marine instruments. Starlink, and later Starshield, changed the game. Right now the R/V Atlantis is sending nearly real-time data to the WHOI data center from the West Galapagos Ridge.
Of course the funding picture for Science has dramatically altered the research landscape, and while this hasn't yet included the fleet's
communications technology, the timing of Amazon's LEO offering could be fortuitous.

Leo......low earth orbit?
JZ, what do you pay for your hardware and monthly service? I would look it up, but I don't want to start another flood of advertising.

It is super amazing!
I just wish there weren't so much space trash associated with it; our heirs will never be able to see the same night sky we grew up with.

After this weeks shocking news, perhaps starlink ownership may change…
Krugman Calls For Control Of Starlink To Be Taken Away From Musk
Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman is calling for control of Starlink to be taken away from Trump crony Elon Musk in the wake of a report that
he ordered a slowdown of a version of the technology used by Ukraine.
“Control of Starlink must, one way or another, be taken away from Elon Musk,” Krugman wrote in a Substack post. “It’s a matter of national
security: we cannot let private individuals make foreign and defense policy, and it would be totally irresponsible to leave a crucial military asset
in the hands of a racist, authoritarian conspiracy theorist.”
Woke!

You can purchase most all of the Starlink hardware at Walmart for a very reasonable price. The hardware is cheap, the WiFi is priced on the data Space
X charges you when you use it.

I bought my Starlink hardware in Mexico from the Starlink website. I had it delivered to a local bar I frequent, perhaps too often. I have forgotten
how much it cost. I have the Residential Maximum plan. It costs around $60 a month, depending on the exchange rate. I used a Bank of America debit
card to establish the account. I'm using it now at a beach in Bahía Concepción. No problems.

Will we ever know who was behind that despicable act? Seems not, as the prime suspects are all pointing elsewhere. What we do know is there is a mass
murderer out there and no one wants to know who it was as long as they can make or save a few bucks in the process. The immediately following gift of
1 share per child does seem a bit suspicious to me tho.

Pure speculation on my part, but could Russian technology have found a way to counter Starlink operations? I am sure thy have been trying.

Elon went rogue, decided he should aid russia.
Looking forward to switching g to Leo in 2027, and never again giving money to Elon’s biz.

Hereis what AI answers today, but yesterday and tomorrow it is sure to be a different answer:
Who cut off Starlink to Ukraine?
AI Overview
Elon Musk ordered SpaceX to restrict and slow down the Starlink and Starshield satellite network speeds for Ukrainian military forces.
WSJ +1
The Decision: Elon Musk made the final call to cap data and connection speeds for high-speed Ukrainian drones and Starshield hardware.
CBS News +2
The Cause: Reports indicate Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump grew angered by Ukrainian military strikes targeting Russian diesel refineries.
Ars Technica +1
Conflicting Claims: While investigative reports and U.S. officials point to Musk acting unilaterally, Musk initially claimed the restrictions were
controlled by the U.S. government or military, and the Trump administration has denied giving a direct order to throttle the service.
Reuters +5
Impact: The speed limits caused connection drops for fast-moving strike and interceptor drones, hampering Ukrainian combat and defense operations.

Luddites like me are reluctant to play around with AI, but did you try searching for what "grok" would find if asked the same question?

You people with your distorted politics should take it elsewhere. The OP was asking about the upcoming LEO network compared to Starlink.

I share your disdain for politics in every thread, but the "OP" was not looking for a comparison of networks. He wants an alternative to Starlink
since Elon Musk "joined the dark side"!
Sounds political to me.
