Need suggestions for Mom

Took Mom to Baja a few years ago and now she is thinking of moving there for 2 months out of the year (Jan-Feb) to get out of the cold. She was thinking of Ensenada as its close to the border if she need to go to San Diego to the hospital or something w/medicare.
Not sure how I feel about Ensenada. Is it safe enough for mom on her own?
I thought maybe San Felipe although I've never been there and could use your thoughts. How about Tecate? I also have not been to San Carlos on the mainland but heard there is a great gringo community and its close enough to the border I guess.
What are the costs of these areas for rent etc. Also any other plces that you might have in mind. I thought Loreto but she doesn't want to have to fly out so it narrows things.
If I could talk her into flying Loreto or La Paz would be great.
thanks in advance
ps mom doesn't drive so she'll be using taxi's and the bus

Another thought for Mom

Anyone want a room-mate for Jan-Feb. in Baja? Haven't talked to her about that but maybe it might be something she/you would be interested in.
She has been an artist for many years and is now writing a couple books. Smart, intelligent, good natured.
Just a thought.

While you gave a lot of info....you might have left out a lot that could be the deciding factor on Mom rooming with someone.....Age? Health? Physical limitations? Dietary restrictions? Smoker? Drinker? Brings men home? <<

How old is she plus all the ? longlegs asked....if she wants to come Ensenada way, we can direct you some. We are about 15 miles south of Ensenada and picked this area for many reasons. Hubby has heart condition and we want EZ access to the US of A for medical care and some things you just can't buy here! We only go maybe every 3 months tops, but we make that our "luxury" couple of days! Next Que is what can she afford per month for rent? BTW, Ensenada is hardly "warm" in the winter but it would beat the heck our of an Idaho winter!

Geez Bajabound, It is difficult to read your posts/responses with that hyper avatar! Not saying it isn't cool, but gadzooks! Punta Banda/ Estero area is within a comfort zone for the not so young, and has all the amenities, hospitals, docs, etc.Loreto is way to far out of the "comfort zone" for someone who may need to be close to medical/specialised/services for your Mom, Acudoc. JMHO. Good to see you again! (bet I will get slammed for this):smug:

She is 70 years old and in good health. Just wants to be close to US just "in case". No real limitations. Maybe can't walk long distances anymore but for every day situations shes fine. No dietary restrictions and is a non smoker and non-drinker.
A couple years ago I took her to Baja for 3 weeks cuz she wanted to see what I've been doing for 18 years. We hit Ensenada, BOLA, Mulege, Loreto, La Paz, La Ventana and a nite in Cabo. It was her 68th birthday and she quit smoking cold turkey after 54 years! Still not a puff. Like I said she is not a drinker but did like a margarita or two when we traveled. Other then that I can't remember the last time she had any alcohol.
She is thinking Ensenada for the same reasons as bajabound as far as location. Cuz she doesn't drive and I was just worried about the safety factor of living there by herself.
If someone has a room for rent or wants a roommate for that time period I think they would find she is a great person, truely. Like I said I haven't mentioned that to her but think she and you, whoever you are, would be very happy. Or maybe just a couple friends to show her the ropes if she had her own place. She is just looking to become a snowbird 2-3 months a year. Not sure what she can afford but she is on a limited income.
As far as the weather we are from Laguna Beach for the last 35+ years so she knows what to expect as far as that goes for they are about the same. She has recently moved to Kansas City, MO. for a change a pace, to spend time with some friends and to write a couple books.
I live in Idaho and get to Baja a couple times a year for 4-6 weeks at a shot. Alot of people here, on Allcoast and the old vag boards have known me for many years and think I have a good rep.
Thanks again for all the help

AcuDoc...I graduated from Downey High in 73 but had been going to Laguna since the early 60's when the greeter was at the pottery Shack.
I'm up in the Seattle area now since 92. Had many a great Mai Tai at the Royal Hawaiian and great dinners too...I was with the Fire Dept there from 80-92 with the reserves...was a landscape contrator too in Emerald Bay, Irvine Cove and Monarch Bay as well as all over town. Great City.

I remember 'the Greeter', in the 60's... His job was duplicated by San Felipe's Clam Man in the 70's!

For her, Tijuana would be close to perfect. Excellent transportation system, vibrant artist community, culture, great restaurants/markets. And I'm confident she could find accomodations in a nice neighborhood that fits her budget.

I believe that he was Greg Neiman's father from conversations I had with Greg some years ago.

Eiler Larson was the Laguna "greeter". I cooked at the Jolly Roger when I was in High school and he was able to eat there for free. So used to cook his dinner often.
Also Ozzy and Harriet Nelson and the family used to come in so cooked their dinners most Monday nights. Years later I was a photojouranlist in OC and covered pro sports, travel and rock and roll. I covered Ricky Nelson a few times and reminded him of the "Monday dinners". We both had a good laugh over it.
CINCO had a childhood friend I think ended up graduating from Downey. It would have been in 72...Mike Rose
