INTERESTING POST FROM THE BBP ON FLOOD

Baja AirLift is Complete

With an excess of twenty fixed wing aircraft, six helicopters, and more than 100 others who provided contributions of clothing, cash, and more, this operation was a huge success. I have to thank all who supported this effort and for those who were there, each will have their own unique memories that will last a lifetime.

We had two AirLift operations, one starting September 5 in Mulege and the second starting September 14 in La Paz.

Baja Bush Pilot members and the public both jumped in with donations of clothing, bedding, cooking supplies, water, tools, and a whole lot more. And members sent us in excess of US$2,000 in money to be used to purchase what we felt was needed. Karaen and I went to Wal-Mart three times over the three-week period purchasing medical supplies, personal hygiene things, knives, forks, spoons, tarps, cooking supplies, matches, candles, and a whole lot more.

And a special thanks to the Wal-Mart Foundation in Mexico who provided relief boxes on the first week and Bancomer (Mexico) who provided relief boxes the second. And then there was a major donation from the Fundacion Bahia de Loreto (Loreto Bay Foundation, Loreto Baja Sur) who provided US$5,000 to pay for some of our fuel expenses used on the second effort. ( http://www.loretobayfoundation.org )

And then there is a special thanks to Windy Zake who owns the B&B Villa Clair in Mulege and Siri Thomas who lives in Loreto. Both were there for whatever was needed, Siri doing most of the coordination with the Red Cross in La Paz and Loreto and Windy who coordinated most of the distribution of supplies in Mulege.

And then there were the people who made the whole thing possible, BBP pilots and crew who flew countless hours moving supplies to and from airports, dirt strips, closed strips (which we opened) and more. And the helicopter pilots who landed down-town La Paz in a parking lot with TV cameras rolling, then going on to land in remote places next to Baja 1 to pick up supplies. They then went on into some unbelievable places; landing in yards, river streams, basketball courts, and in some cases where they could not land, dropping low enough that boxes could be dropped into the arms of isolated families waiting below.

As one hardened and “type A” pilot reflected at the end of one of our days, I thought this was just another one of Jack’s adventures until I made my first drop. People were standing in yards waving shirts and asking for help. The tears in their eyes when they saw what we brought in was more than words can say.

When I went into this, I was going to list all the persons involved both in the states and in Mexico. This has grown into a huge task however, I will make that attempt.

We have the names of people making cash donations as those that have dropped off “things” to the office. However, with all the aircraft arriving and departing during the effort at different places, it was impossible to an accurate track. I am asking that each pilot who worked in Mexico e-mail me with:

1) Their name:

2) Crews name:

3) N#

4) Type of aircraft:

5) Days you were involved in the effort:

6) What you did.

7) Shirt size, pilot:

8) Shirt size, crew

Those that have made cash donations direct to the BBP will receive a special certificate and pilots and crew, in addition to the certificate, will receive a Baja AirLift tee shirt (as soon as we get them printed). Please get this information to me within one week, send it to bbp@bajabushpilots.com with the information line “Information on relief”. We will only be acknowledging those that respond.

With this information, we will provide a list of all as well as e-mail addresses. Many new friends were made on both sides of the border and many have asked for e-mail addresses of all involved. That will happen.

Everyone is heroes in this event, some just a little more than others. The helicopters, in some cases, flew over 6 hours just to get to Mulege. And others shuttled relief supplies from airport to airport and some provided transportation to both American and Mexican persons involved in this effort. And again, a special thanks to all who donated. The Red Cross supplied basic survival items; you who donated provided the additional needs to help take some of the pain away from those that lost most of their possessions.

And I have to share with all one very special e-mail that I received from the wife of one of our pilots that worked the second effort:

Good Morning Jack!
XXXX is safely home after just a couple of days spent down in the Mulege area, giving a hand with the emergency relief effort for those that suffered as the result of Hurricane John. His stories of how the local people were so grateful and were so concerned about their fellow citizens were so moving.
I am amazed at how the pilots of various types of aircraft dedicated themselves to helping humanity. They gave many, many hours. They gave lots and lots of energy and I insert here a very big thank you to them too.
XXXX spoke of the many hats you have worn over the past several weeks and as he did, I came to realize the enormity of what you have invested! Out of your personal life, you gave and you gave. You orchestrated, you directed, you made things happen! You truly deserve a much needed rest and I hope that you now make yourself and your wife - your priority! Get some peace and quiet, relax, put your feet up and enjoy some serenity.
Thank YOU, Jack, for all that you have done in showing the selflessness of the BBP. Thank YOU, Jack, for the willingness to begin a huge effort and for not giving up until the job was complete. I know that the local people of the area have expressed their gratefulness to you. I, too, want to acknowledge from here, in my comfy home with a full tummy, how much I appreciate you as a person that truly cares about others that are less fortunate than you or I.

I´m proud to know you!

WOW, I had no idea! It's pilots like you, Mike, and all the others who participated that make this world a better place.
My hat is off to you and the BBP organization!

Amen to that. My wife and I were unable to get down their to help but hope to next month. Your unselfish contribution to the flood victims is a great example of brotherly love. The world needs more of that.:bounce:

One can't help read of all these heroic efforts...

...without getting a lump in your throat! All your group's tireless efforts, being performed, for the most part, 'under the radar' (pun?) of media hype we are used to up north, says lots and lots about 'real' people helping people - just pitching in, getting their hands dirty!

Well done, one and all, good on ya'll...!

Special Thanks from someone who was very much concerned about a Mulege friend, who just survived the ordeal by chance. And I wish ALL the BBP to stay safe on future trips.
It will never be forgotten what you all did.
My special REGARDS to ALL of YOU, who are still involved in getting relief and support to those in need now.

And just to clarify - I posted that blurb as an info as to what others in the BBP did - not me, i was not one of the support planes, the weekend I wanted to go we got cancelled due to threats of Lane. I have collected quite a bit of supplies and clothes all to be on board when i can make it south to Mulege.

but yes - the BBP did make a huge difference - kudos to them!!

We landed in Mulege on Saturday, 9/9. Met Jack @ the Serenidad airstrip in Mulege, along w/Wendy who helped direct the donations we took down. Jack was going 100 mph directing air traffic from the ground, then was in Loreto about 2 hours later, then back in Mulege later that afternoon for some rest, and out way before the sun was up on the 10th to God knows where.

Don't know if they flew the BBP flag, but from the Sacto River Delta area, Joey Sanchez & his 206 flew a max load of cargo to Mulege on 9/9, and Les Lyman & his 210 flew me and a coupla other scroungy gringos to get the scoop on needed school donations.

It was a helluva job. And Jack is a helluva guy!!
Not to mention the other pilots who donated their time and the airtime of their airtoys. That stuff ain't cheap. Hopefully BBP will post a full roster soon.
