:lol:We have two dogs with us most of the time. A Wiener dog that barks at anything and a Rottweiler that goes on alert when the wiener dog thinks trouble is at hand. I believe the wiener dog gets self assurance with the Rot right behind him. Without the wiener dog, our Rot would be sleeping all day and night and not hear a thing.

A nice big folding pruning saw is effective too....for trimming the branches along remote roads, of course.

If I can't find a 'weapon' somewhere in my camping gear or tool box, then I'm just not trying.

We call them DACKEL. and they are indeed NOISY. Making a fuss about EVERYTHING. Are kown NOT to OBEY, rather to pretend to be deaf when given orders! Or doing exactly the opposite of what told.
And when we had Niki - we didn't need any security device. The neigborhood would hear him up and down the road when ANYONE tried to come close to the GATE of our house.

Ours even started to DEFEND his foodbowl when my Grandmom came for a visit (once or twice a week) - he gulped quickly all the food down, before she entered the house!! Which resulted in an running gag within the family.

If a person is behaving like a DACKEL - we say OH, he/she is applying the Dackel RULE.
THANKS DOUG - that was a fast reply BTW!!
You are either up late, or very early!

I have always said there is nothing better then a dog that will protect.....any terrier will announce unwanted visitors as they are duh....territorial...guess that is where they got the name....my only problem is I now have 4 that live with me.....omg....it is a dogs home to say the least....but no problem with banditos at all....they walk way around our palapa...in fact when traveling last year..due to some screw up...probably on my part....I ended up sleeping on the deck (due to the 106 degree heat) with my stafforshire terrier so she would not croak....the only problem is there was a 95% men population on board....slept like a log because she stayed awake all night just begging someone to come near me.....it really was actually quite funny....I loved it.....dogs are truley man's and woman's best friend.....

I'm pretty well travelled...Bali twice, all over baja and Mexico, Italy, Sicily and Tunisia...I'm always looking behind me, stand tall, walk with purpose and have a good gut instinct. I'm very confident that I'd help someone in trouble or getting attacked. Streetsmarts has much to do with it....great read.

A couple of years ago in San Felipe, two women were tied up and beaten very badly then robbed. I know for sure that one of them had Dogs. The Criminal kicked the **** out of the dogs until they STOPPED barking. Maybe someone else knows more about the story.
I suppose you can surmise the Moral of this story.

Then why do we call them "dachshunds"?

Is this an inside German joke?

Dave - I can't prove it, nor could I find any sites to clarify it - BUT I think that DACKEL is just an derivative of DACHS - (witch means Badger), for me it sounds like an OLD -medieval German expression.
more on ityou find here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dackel

You have to be aware every time you step outside of your home...Look around you and if it does'nt feel right get back to your safe zone. Im currently working in Mexico City and am with my 13 year old son. I finished all my work yesterday (on the golf course) and we are going to see the sights today. The Castle on Reforma and a few other things I have really wanted to see but am never with my family while Im here to enjoy their company. I always----ALWAYS---check my surroundings for something different or unusual and take just enough money for the day. I dont even take my ID. Dont need it. I like the guy in this thread who wrote that being really safe is 50 miles from nowhere. Please ask the two men from Nevada who were found camping south of San Quintin many years ago found dead. Bajaguy knows all to well also---we both worked on that murder case.

Be safe out there and dont be stupid!

I have taken to carrying an aluminum bat and the cheap, under ten dollar machete from Walmart.

Yes, Bob and Susan, it's made in China.

Gonna bring the wifes pepper spray now, too.

"SHEEP, WOLF, OR SHEEPDOG"

Bajaguy---------

EXCELLENT post----best on that subject that I have ever seen.

That presentation tells it exactly like it is, in my opinion.

Thank you.

Thanks, Barry......I think that all of us who are concerned for the safety of others and ourselves should adopt the Sheepdog mentality and habits....even if we are disguised in Sheep's clothing. Having the proper mindset and being prepared BEFOREHAND are the keys to success.
