Election time poem

Pais de los Pastores Borrachones

There has been a serious crime.
A child has been neglected and mistreated.
It is a boy.
The boy is Mexico.

One hundred suspects (or one hundred million; does it matter?) are in the police station.

There are two rooms in the station.
The line-up room has a small stage, well lit with numbers on the wall.
The witness room has wooden chairs and a one-way, mirrored, viewing glass.

There are many witnesses in the line up room.
There are suspects in the witness room.
What kind of crime is this?
Frightened and confused, everybody talks at once.

Reports say the crime did not happen on the 10th or on the 12th.
It is believed the neglect and mistreatment has gone on for a very long time.

The boy (the victim) is still at large.
Soiled, hungry, proud, he does not want revenge or justice.
The boy wants only
rain.
And a little later (por favor senores),
flowers.
