News from Earthquake Shari, Asuncion
Hola everyone from Shari in Asuncion. I spoke to her Dec. 3, at about 11am and was able to get through to her phone just by luck. She and Juan are
fine and sleeping in San Roque and coming into town each day for an hour or two in the morning. She asked me to post on her behalf to say as the
power is out. She says thanks to everyone for their concern but they are fine, shaken and stirred a little.
There are incorrect news reports on the radio saying that everything is fine. Basically it is a ghost town as really nobody is living in town.
There are about a hundred people living at the air strip but it is pretty miserable as Santa Anna is blowing today at about 30 knots. The fishermen
are going out when the weather allows it because otherwise they have no income at all.
Shari's place has borne the worst of it all as it is on the point. They have loads of cracks in the wall everywhere. The rest of the houses and
buildings in the town have a few cracks at the corners and in various places but no where near as bad as Shari's.
The rest of the townspeople will come back into town for a short time to check their houses, but basically the town is deserted except for the
scientists, police and army. The quakes are continuing daily still and if a quiet day during the day they get a bigger one later on in the day.
Sometimes people would move back in and think that is ok when another one hits and back out to the airstrip they go. Sirena is in Guerro Negro and
Shari is in touch most days by phone when she gets into the house.
Hopefully everything will settle down soon.

Hi everyone...well, I'm just here in town for a quick shower, post this and its b ack to San Roque where life is a little calmer although reading
these tsunami posts has me a little more worried there. We can only slightly feel the big quakes out in SR and the scientists told us there is
virtually NO threat of tsunami at all...hmmm. Well, things are a little quieter here today, it seems this thing has a bit of a pattern. If it is a
quiet afternoon and night then around 7:30-9:30 we can expect a good shaker...if it's calm in the morning then around 4-6 in the afternoon can be a
real ripper...so I planned my trip for mid day today as there was nothing in the morning. Today is a severe santa anna wind that is strashing our
palapa...around 45 knots right now. It's funny how this quake thing is reported on the La Paz radio station....they say things are getting back to
normal here in town...HA! It's a ghost town...everything is closed...some stores open for a bit while the owners are in town, then a quake happens and
everyone heads for the hills again...no school...no church...no BEER! Most people are with family in other towns and a couple hundred are camped out
at ;the airstrip in the cold and wind. The government has come out with a couple of care packages of rice, beans, sugar, oil, coffee and animal
crackers and we've been eating fish, mussels, clams etc. WE have all our animals out at San Roque now and are enjoying the calm out there...glad to
have another home to live in. I sure am glad I had lots of food squirreled away as we've been feeding others too. The problem here is that after a
day of relative calm some families come back to their houses only to experience another big quake so everybody is on edge, nervous and not really keen
to go back to their homes yet. LOts of rumors and no real information has been offered but I guess the tv crews got here today. Seeing these posts
about other areas having quakes too doesn't help calm me much either. Maybe it isn't so localized then??? For the time being I'm happy out in San
Roque but we will keep a car loaded with survival gear to head up the hill if the tsunami comes. So I'm gonna sign off now....my last post was
interupted by a rather nasty quake and I didn't get my shower so again thanks for your concern everyone and I'll post again in a couple days.

GOSH - will the house be useable afterwards ?I think that it might be dangrous to just move in after all the shaking and the cracks in the
walls??!!!!Would be scared that the whole house collapses over me while asleep!
I hope Shari is carefully evaluating this!
STAY safe and godspeed with you!!!

To clarify while the power is still on here...we have alot of cracks in the house but some houses are worse...adobe and lots of cracked cement roofs
but my concern here is that the rock cliff we sit on is also visibly cracking so if by chance a bigger quake does happen, I don't really want to be in
this house for it...some of the cliffs in town have had a bit of falling rock etc as well. Our house seems fine but the cracks get bigger and more
appear after each big shake. these are interesting times for sure!

Shari,
Good to hear you are OK.
There is very little threat from a Tsunami, as the scientists told you. Most tsunami danger comes after the tsunami has built up after traveling a
LONG distance over water, AND after a large quake. The quakes in Asunción area are very close to the coast, and so far have been small. The quake
needed to generate a tsunami that would affect the local coast would more than likely destroy more than the tsunami ever would....HOWEVER, it is not
likely that the fault that is causing the quakes would ever even produce a large quake anyway.

Thank godness you have another place to go, and I'm so happy that you and Juan are safe at San Roque, if you have to be moved away from your home,
that is a beautiful place to be.
