Loreto Marine Park Survey
Masters candidate in marine ecology, conservation, and sustainable management, Karen Stamieszkin spent the entire summer of 2006 in Loreto. Loreto is
about as far as you can get on the North American continent from her home in Maine, USA. She is working on several programs to help manage the Loreto
Marine Park. Right now she needs data in the form of a survey that she is conducting in order to evaluate the current reception by users of the park.
Please help Karen by sending her the information that she needs to generate enough data for her study. You may download and fill out the survey and
send it to her via e-mail. Access the survey here:

I posted this on my website several months ago but she needs more surveys in order to write her thesis, so perhaps you can help out. I told her that
I'd post on some forums that knowledgeable Baja aficionados frequent, so she can get more responses.

I emailed her months ago but got no response, but I figure she didn't want to hear what I had to say.
So is the "Marine Park" considering closing off large areas to fishing and raising the daily fee to $8?
There are important issues related to her survey. We are not asked about those issues; we are dictated too.

I tried to get through also with no Success:
Several years ago, prior to the Marine Park there was a young man from the University of New Mexico that did a 3 year long Study of the Pelicans of
Loreto's Isal De Carmen. He spent 3 years of Summers living on the Islands and observing the Pelicans. He did an Excellent Job. Why?? He lived and
operated in and amongst the Pelicans.
I would suggest to the Young Lady that is doing the Survey to add to her experience with the following:
Attend the University of Mexico for 1 year of Study on the workings of the Mexican Govt.
Contact the Murillo, Ferandez, Sucuray , Davis, and other Old Time Fisherman Familes to get Correct information from years Past.
Contact some of the Kayak people who have been there for several years.
And the most important; Learn to approach the Management of the Marine Reserve from the Laws and the desires of the Mexican People--If the many good
things that have been developed in recent years by the States and other countries can be put in Place by the Mexican People their Way it might be a
better Managed Reserve.
So many times the educated People do not have that experience to go along with the Education and fail, or are unable to blend the two things into a
"Proper Solution"".
If she Learned from her time in Loreto, I hope that she will be able to use some"Common Sense" in producing her Survey for the Mexicanos of Loreto for
their Benefit..

We were in town on Thursday and stopped in the shop to meet you.
The very nice girls told me you were home; didn't want to disturb and we were short on time. HAD to do lunch at Cafe Ole' like usual and get a haircut
in the mall while my wife shopped.....,....,....!
Very nice looking shop.
Maybe next month ?

Hi there,
This is a survey that I posted for Karen to help her out. she went to all the shops and hotels to put hardcopies out but very little response. I
could critique it but its not my project. Also I don't think she's in the position to respond to all the mail as she needs to get the specific
information she's looking for. Her project has nothing to do with how much of a fee that park will charge, she told me that she's only interested in
IF people would be willing to pay and how much they'd be willing to pay. I gave her my opinions; I wouldn't be willing to pay and I don't think many
folks using the park would be willing to pay until the abuse stops, I'm talking selective enforcement of their own statutes, allowance of destructive
commercial fishing practices, obscure permit regulations, etc. I'm not convinced that the money that gets paid for those bracelets does anything much
to improve the condition of the park or the people inside of it. Anyway, my opinions not hers necessarily but she was patient in listening to me vent
and seemed to time her visits when I didn't have folks in the shop to listen.
I haven't been in my shop much as there's not been much fishing going on due to the foul weather. Also the girls are trained and they seem to make
better tips when I'm not there. I'm still waiting for Telmex to move my phone over so I have to work on the reservations, etc at home these days.
I think my site is down today due to who the hell knows what up in LA.

Pam, you new place is really nice!
We were hanging at the marina this afternoon. Slow day fishing for most folks. But a certain tin boat got three nice yellowtail, on the surface.
The tide was low and the ramp was entertaining. One trailer axle broke loose, one strap broke, and someone laid a nice smokescreen from his
clutch.

 Watching folks launch their boats can be well worth the time.
Running the motor full bore with the motor/outdrive up and wondering why the boat won't go?  More fun than a barrel of monkeys! The husband yelling at the
wife and on and on. Ought to make a movie out of it.

I copied the survey into a word.doc, added my answers in bold, and then sent an Email to the researcher (Karen) with my answered survey attached.
Only took 5 mins., and hope it helps.

Does anyone out there have any up to date information on the property sale at Ensenada Blanca near Ligui and what is happening. We have herd recently
there is a big water issue, as well as sewage issuues??? If it is on part of and is that close to the Loreto Marine Park how is this going to play
out???

The land has sold, and 2000+ units are planned by the Villas group. Plans are currently being drawn up by their architects; there is no information
yet as to where they will get water or sewage.
There are lots of issues and lots of rumors. Access to the beach and propery to the immediate south of their property has been questioned, as well as
the continued existence of the village that lies right in the path of access for the trucks and other equipment.
So far, the Marine Park does not seem to be much of a player in the development plans here. There is a development plan for the Loreto Area and if the
Park had any problems with it they stayed below everyone's radar. The Villas development is consistent with the plan, which calls for development of
all suitable (non-cliff) waterfront property from Ensenada Blanca to El Bajo north of Loreto.

OK, just got more info in the local paper. After all the hoopla, including the erection of a controversial fence (which is now open) a representative
of the Villas group pledged to the local presidente and the state governor that public access will be allowed, including parking, restrooms, trash
cans, a public beach club and restaurants.
