Satellite TV Scam
I have had four reports now of people buying Dish Network TV receivers from persons in the area and paying somewhere around $1,000 for a years' worth
of programming in advance. After a few months, the receiver shuts off, and the guy who sold it can't be found (surprise). When the victims call Dish
Network to start a legitimate account in their own name, they are told the receiver has been shut off for non-payment with a balance due, and/or is in
someone else's name and cannot be transferred.
If someone offers you a Dish Network TV setup where you are not paying Dish Network directly for the programming, then watch out. You do not own the
Dish Network receiver or have a legitimate Dish Network account. There is nothing to stop the middleman from stiffing Dish Network for the
programming you paid for and disappearing with your money...

In the
case of Dish Network, the customer owns the gear, or at least they should...
You hit it on the head, you're at the mercy of the tech guy. I've never thought it sounded like a good idea to have a business where all of your
customers' boxes go down at the same time; It's gonna happen on a weekend before some big TV event and you're taking all those panicked phone calls at
once... No biggie with just a few customers, but with 20 or 30? No wonder they get tired of it and split.

Dish Ownership ?
I was told that Dish Network provides the DVR Receivers ONLY on a Lease basis.

They do have lease programs in the US as a part of the programming term commitment but you can also buy the receivers without the commitment.
Also, you basically "lease" the DVR service since you pay a monthly fee for it (on some older models, like the 508s, you didn't have to pay for the
DVR).

I think it is only the card that is supposed to be leased, not the receiver.
When I used to work for Dish in tech support we could not disconnect or cancel a customer. We had to send them to the disconnect dept. Their main job
was to try to keep the customer from canceling but failing that they were supposed to get the customer to return the smart card because a pirate
outfit could reprogram it. I don't think many people returned the card though.

I own mine
I have two differnt receivers in my dish network configuration - one for my HD and one regular box. I have two dishes as well to accomodate the
digital reception- don't know what I'll do when I move to Baja Sur in 2008 but I own the boxes.

Just remember that if you intend to view Dish Network south of Guerrero Negro, you will need a larger than normal dish.
1.2 meter dish does a fair job, 160 or so FTA channels plus music.
1.8 meter dish does a good job, 250 FTA channels plus music.
Those same dishes will work well with regular dish receivers.
