Freshwater endangered - Puerto Los Cabos
After reading the comments to bajajudy's post I feel that some of you might want to read about what is going on at/with Pueblo la Playa, Greenpeace
and Puerto Los Cabos.
First I want you to read the information that Angeles del Estero is giving out, I have got this to distribute and guess that this is one way of doing
so.
"WARNING
Your freshwater for drinking and irrigation is Endangered!!!
Did you know that the San Jose Estuary provides the majority of freshwater to the Los Cabos Region?"
With arrows it is shown how "clouds pick up water (without salt) from the sea (Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean). Water is released from clouds". The
arrow goes to Sierra Laguna Mountains. From the mountains "rain flows into small rivers until meets large river". The arrow goes to San Jose Arroyo
and Estuary, "Some water seeps into groundwater replenishing our wells, the rest flows downstream" the arrow goes to Lagoons of the San Jose Estuary
"How is our freshwater endangered?
1. Water flows to the lowest point. Previously, the lowest point in our Los Cabos region was the San Jose Estuary. Now the lowest point is the new
marina. While digging the new marina a portion of the barrier that protects our groundwater was removed. This has allowed our freshwa
ter to flow into the marina. When Puerto Los Cabos pumps the water out of the marina so they can continue to work - they are actually pumpimg our
freshwater out to sea. If this continues our wells will dry up. The wells furthest from the marina will dry up first.
2. The new marina is now connected to
our freshwater supply - once the marina is open the saltwater will fill up the marina. Since saltwater is heavier than freshwater - the saltwater
will sink to the bottom of the marina. The saltwater will then flow into our groundwater and contaminate our freswater with saltwater. Once this
happens our freshwater is lost forever!
What can be done?
Immediately, Puerto Los Cabos needs to STOP pumping our freshwater out to sea! This will protect our wells from drying up so we can continue to have
freshwater for drinking and irrigating.
Second, Puerto Los Cabos needs to install an impermeable barrier at the bottom of the marina - this will cut-off the marina's link with our
freshwater.
How Can I Ensure Puerto Los Cabos Does This?"
After this part is a list of offices to contact to protest, that I can not mention here.
The information ends "Like a mother, the San Jose Estuary has provided us with nourishment and protection. Now we must nourish her by helping to
protect her for our life and that of our future generations."
