The Culture of Dog Fights
This Gringa wants to understand.
Recently, I was driving through Rosarito and came up alongside a stake bed truck without any sides, just a bare bed.
Standing in the bed was a magnificent, well-conditioned Pit Bull. He was wearing a black leather bandolier harness with silver studs. The dog was
not leashed or fastened to the vehicle; he simply maintained his position throughout the truck’s acceleration and deceleration by adjusting his
balance.
My friend said, “That’s a dog for the fights.”

This is one of the very few things about Baja--
that I have no desire to understand!

What's to understand?
Dog-fighting is illegal. Law is not enforced.
It's Mexico...Right Captain/Cardon Man?

Two dogs fighting to the death and someone driving on the beach are 2 very different things. Futhermore, most Mexicans don't condone or engage in such
fighting. Which is not the case with beach riding as we have discussed ad nauseam in another thread. Comparing the two issues is way off
base.

Dog fighting is wrong, it's that simple. I don't care what country it is.

As Tehag said bloodsport is common;
The culture of dog fights = the culture of the macho

Now if we could just get the dogfight promoters to have the events on remote beaches accesible only by ATV's.

Strange Association
Although I have little interest in Pro Football, it might be rational and understandable to equate aspects of that sport with Prize-Fighting or the
like, but How it is possible to equate it with the training of Dogs to viciously tear each other apart ?

Refering to dog fighting as a cultural trait is giving the same consideration to anybody demented enough to stuff their newborn into a blender.
How can people be this sick?

I wasn't comparing the two issues. Just making a comment on the level of general respect Mexicans have for the law.
But just for the sake of argument:
One law deals with how people treat and respect animals, the other (in effect) deals with how people treat and respect each other.
While it is true that most Mexicans don't condone or engage in dog-fighting I would argue that millions of its populace both condone
and enjoy bloodsports AND many more Mexicans both condone and engage in dog-fighting than ride ATV's on Mexico's beaches.
My advocacy is solely for the rule of law. I am convinced that all Mexico's trouble stems from its disrespect.

Not sure but I think Larry was referring to a certain professional quarterback from Atlanta.

North of the border the treatment of animals has become far more important to some than the treatment of humans.....
Still stand by my first comment.
I will add that the general breakdown, throughout the world, of the respect (warranted or not) for the law is rapidly changing the face of cultures
and civilizations and not for the better.
To my way of thinking far too many of us forget that laws are/should be passed to protect and nurture civilizations and when they are ignored it is
mostly at the expense of the helpless.

I would rather see a human run down in the street than a dog. I sincerely mean this.

Bloodsport is enjoyed by many men and a few women all over the world even in the USA. Not condoning dog fighting but it doesn't only take place in
Mexico.
