Gourmet Treats at the Grocery in Rosarito
The big Super Comercial Mexicana in Rosarito (very visible from the toll road and accessible by the second freeway exit in town) has a freestanding,
refrigerated carousel in the deli area labeled Quesos Importados (as I remember).
Browsing through this the other day, I found a selection of different Manchego cheeses from Spain, various imported and locally produced Edam and
Gouda cheeses from Holland (including smoked), various blue cheeses from Denmark, ash covered goat cheese logs from Spain, , locally produced Serrano
ham,pepperoni and salami and imported pate - duck and goose.
Also, I discovered and bought some very, very good versions of Brie - plain and green peppercorn - made in Michigan(!).
Everything was either vaccum packed or double-wrapped, with packed by date and/or (in the case of the factory wrapped versions) sell by date info.
I've been a faithful customer of Trader Joe's for more years than I care to mention; the gourmet food display at the Super Comercial was scrupulously
clean.
Prices seemed fair, taking into consideration import taxes.
Of course, the locally produced cheeses were cheaper, but it was very nice to have a wider selection of more complex and varied choices.
Also, the coffee cafe inside the store sells a good selection of all Mexican produced, roasted whole coffee beans (all versions are priced at
approximately $6.00 per pound). They will grind them for you or, in my case, sell the whole beans for grinding at home.
