How do they survive out there?

It never fails to amaze me on the drive down Highway 1 to see a solo bicyclist in the middle of nowhere. It is dangerous enough driving highway 1, but on a bicycle it seems suicidal to share the narrow road with the cars and big rigs.
I also think about the “wanderers” I see – a scruffy guy wrapped in a blanket out walking on the side of the road in the midday heat with the nearest town 50 miles away.

We always see at least a half dozen from each category during our trips to and from BOLA. How do they survive out there? Food, water, shelter?

It must be by luck. There is no way I would ride my bicycle on a paved hwy in Baja. Could you imagine two 18 wheelers coming toward you, one behind and one in front or a bus. No thanks

Here in our area of the east cape,in the winter months, we encounter Lotsa
bikes on Hwy 1, some riding two abreast yakking away, with there Speedos
and aerodynamic plastic punkin protectors on their little cone heads!
I have even seen daddies and momies dragging thier infant children in a cart behind their bikes. I find that absoulety nuts. Meet one dump truck and a Aguila bus at the same time, who's gonna
get checked out???
You cannot Fix Stupidity!
Same thing with rental quads on the carrettra, every year some pilgrim bites death in the butt.
Went to Cabo yesterday, saw two dudes Walking side by side on the 4 lane, with a surfboard to protect them from the traffic doing about 70 mph!!
Again, can't fix stupid!!
And they Vote!!

Their called "bike N-zis" in calif. It wouldn't hurt to get rid of some of them. A little diesel fuel on a turn at the bottom of a steep hill is a useful tool.

They show a blatant disregard for the damage they can do to the fender of a fast moving car. Bad Baja etiquete.

not only that, but when a vehicle goes off the road the entire contents of the vehicle become free to anyone who cares to stop and get their grab-on!

what does a bicycle flying off the road add to the economy of baja?????:?:

Once I saw a young couple on a very small moped 30-40 miles north of the BOLA turn off headed south. They had back packs and plastic gallon milk jugs filled with what looked like gas and H2O. Where were they headed? They never showed in Bay of LA. Where did they come from? Did they survive hwy 1? If they did It might make a great book.

Nah, more like bussard food, which they already got plenty of, i.e. dead cows, goats, rabbits, lizzards, eropeonones, assorted other road kill, anyone study how much time a bike needs to rust away in Baja, sorta like an undiscovered Tecate can, or a dirty diaper?

i think those bike riders are carrying some kind of death wish...i'm sure it is some adventure but i've seen too many bad things happen on that road to do it on a bike...one year, heading south, after clearing the winding hills sout of rosario, we saw a biker ahead.we pulled over to see if they needed/wanted a lift, some food, etc. turned out to be a very attractive young lady from canada heading i believe to bola, then who knows where.after some small talk i learned she saw some article about the beauty of baja and how awesome it is to see it by bicycle, etc. etc.plus she had never been to baja,so forth and so on.we offered some friendly advice, gave her an apple and some water and off she went...i often wonder if she made it .perhaps she posts here?

BICICLETA

AVID BIKER HERE, HOWEVER,
After my first Baja trip Sept '06, making it down to La Paz, I still had a few brain cells convincing me to leave my road bike in storage. May have to sell it. It's as useful as my skis and snowshoes here.

I have been in some challenging situations on a bike, but prefer not to be a hood ornament on HWY 1. Mtn bike on off-road trails is my rule here for now.

Also, interesting how much crap bikers catch. Yes, a few bikers are extreme in their death wish. Wonder how many farm tractors catch the same amount of venom for "being in the way".

"USE THE FRIGGIN' SIDEWALK!" shout at bikers is right up there with yelling "FORE" when driving by a golf course. BRILLIANT!

I have a bicycle and try to stay in shape to use it on trails. I don't ride it much around here, because people really don't like the freaks and numb skulls bicyclist around the San Francisco area. Bicycles are getting a bad rap from these people and and the Baja loonies.
The Baja loonies are made up of mostly people who get the idea from other Real Loonies at extreme magazines...I think from the S.F. Bay Area...These nuts do not warn people they may lose their life...just that it is doable.
Also, interesting how much crap bikers catch. Yes, a few bikers are extreme in their death wish.
I believe they catch crap, because it is not "just" their lives they are messing with. If I kill one of them...it will forever affect me....knowing that if I come on one in MY motorhome and cannot stop in time for whatever the reason...they are going over the side as they are the element that is creating the danger.

The Pacific Coast Hwy runs thru
town here in So Orange County
Ca., I often seen bike riders
headed so. with bike bags, etc.,
headed to Mex and
beyond, i've spoke to several,
more often than not they
are Europeans, with Swiss flags
or some other, my theory is
that they see the road on
a map down Baja, and assume
it to be like any other road,
all of us know better,
recently met a couple Euros
on recumbent bikes, headed
to La Paz, ferry over then on to
Cancun

While we were at Cielito Lindo last year we had a young bicyclist (mid 20s) named
Andre camp next to us and he was from Luxembourg. He told us that he rode on average 50 to 75 miles a day on average.
The only problem he had was when he took the shortcut through the river bottom
coming off the main highway to the campground ( the old road).
He was on his way to cabo then he was planning on taking the ferry across to the mainland and further south.
Sure hope he made it

Bicyclist? Can't figure out just wh.y they do that.........death wish? Don't know any better? I do know they scare me!

Hitchhikers? I know how they survive, Nomads like you and I, see them along the road, in sleeping bags, no water, a plastic bag by their side and stop and give them a ride.
