The Accidental Tourist (or transferring your feelings to others)

The Accidental Tourist

About three weeks ago my brother Bob and his wife Sylvia came down here to sunny Baja to do a little fishing. I don’t normally get along with Sylvia; Bob thinks she walks on water but I find her too self-absorbed and snooty. Anyway, she loves to fish and the second time out she caught a whopper of a permit. Back at the house she was all giggles and smiles as I took the pictures of her holding the thing up.

She said she would love to put the picture on a T shirt – I had bought two sheets of transfer paper at the new Office Depot in Cabo San Lucas, loaned one out, had the other next to the printer. So just to show I can be tolerant, a good host, I suggested we get out one of my newer white T shirts, print the picture, give the transfer a try. I hadn’t used the stuff before and the instructions were in Spanish. How hard could it be? After we had the second (or third) pitcher of Margaritas we were ready.

Did the print job, the paper looked just about the right size and was a pretty sharp image. I had Sylvia put on the T shirt, lie flat on her back on a lounge chair on the patio, set the iron for about Medium (not all the way up to cotton), pressed the paper on her belly and, well, you know the rest. We ended up having to take her to the clinic for some pain killers and salve. Could have been some kind of allergic reaction, the wrong setting on the iron, maybe I took too long to apply the thing, could have been lots of things.

Well, they’re back home in Cleveland now – Bob owes me some pictures. He says the scar (scab, burnt skin, whatever) is still pretty clear, you can tell it’s a fish, a fat, pompano type but you really can’t tell it’s Sylvia (you can see her chin is all). Live and learn. Chayo, my wife’s little gal who comes once a week to do her nails and toenails is now staying over to give me private Spanish lessons. We started with transfer paper instructions as a kind of belated apology to Bob and Sylvia. At the airport, when I reminded them about the “most accidents happen around the house” thing neither one of them even smiled.

I've always had some of my best ideas after a couple of pitchers. BTW, I was able to snap a photo of you immediately after you applied the hot iron.

It could have been worse, you could have put your sister-in-law through the printer! I don't think I want you to do my photo transfers, Osprey, but I'll keep reading your stories...
