wanted, sailing dinghy 14 to 18'
hello, i'm looking for an economical and simple sailing dinghy near the sea of cortez. Engine not required. Not looking for a high performance
racer. Hoping to find something like a wayfarer or even an enterprise...for extended, minimalist backpack-style beach cruise / camp trip this winter.
I don't mind doing a bit of work on it and cosmetics aren't important but it needs to be generally sound and seaworthy.
thanks so much,
murray

I have a 16' Sailfish that is a blast to sail and has room to put gear in and can accomodate 2 people. It is in good shape and sails like a dream.
We don't use it much here as it's a challenge to get it through the surf on the pacific side. $200...come and get it though. It has a little beach
launch trailer rig too if ya want it.

Hi, thanks for the replies...nope, not the sea-scout murray's, it's my first name...perhaps i'll meet them out on the water?
If the sailfish is really a sunfish it's almost but not quite enough boat for what we have in mind...still looking for something though, a cross-over
day/sailer /dinghy like an enterprise. One of the big 18' hobie cats would probably work too but i'm not sure I want to be that wet all the time..
Thanks all, hope it is well down there in baja

http://craigslist.com is good place to find boats. Often in Mex the boats are for sale because they are missing critical/difficult to
find/non-replaceable parts. You mention a 14-18' boat. For example, a Flying Dutchman, hobie 18, 18' skiff or such are modern/fast craft which are
available. On the other hand it is possible to find/make a simple boat which would be fun to sail such as an older thin panga style with a wood mast
and boom and simple sail either tarp or canvas. The former require great skill with adequate crew, the ability to replace important expensive parts
e.g. broken mast could be 1-3k and be stored in a highly secure manner versus the later which could be sailed single handed and left on the beach.
There will be the flying dutchman nationals in San Diego on Oct 4-5 and that would be a perfect opportunity to buy a real fast sailboat that meets
your qualification.
BTW where do you want to go sailing and do you know how to sail? Most marinas such as La Paz are full of crappy '18-25 foot boats for you that would
certainly meet your needs at low cost, 1k.

Hi gnukid..
so, it's like this...i've sailed and lived aboard lots. Plan A was to sail our own boat offshore to mexico and central america this fall and
winter...ran out of time to get some rigging projects finished and it's too late in the season now to pull off a BC departure.
Plan B is to mess about the sea of cortez, camp cruising on a simple cheap open boat. I'm looking at craig's list in san diego and thinking about
boats there but it means i have to arrange a vehicle and trailer to get across the border etc etc.
Would much prefer to take the bus down and throw some drybags into something that's already in the water there. I've never been to baja so i just
don't know what is available or where to look.
I'd thought about putting in at puerto penasco and going south (with the NW winds) until it wasn't fun anymore, then leaving the boat and heading
home overland.
I guess i could consider a used cabin sailboat at a marina somewhere, but the gear starts to get complicated and expensive pretty quickly..also i'd
really like something shoal draft that i can beach easily
Also, I haven't been able to find out much about what the local panga hull shape is like and whether they can sail...not at all against the ideas of
lee boards and a poly tarp lug sail or something improvised...maybe even a DIY outrigger canoe with windsurfer masts and some tire tubes for safety
flotation..
If anyone has any leads on something interesting that floats and is cheap on the sea of cortez side that would be awesome...if it doesn't go to
weather or have an engine i'd prefer something further north that i can sail south...
thanks again...
