John Steinbeck said it this way in "Log From the Sea of Cortez", 1940:

"Trying to remember [Baja California] is like trying to recreate a dream. This is by no means a sentimental thing, it has little to do with beauty or even conscious liking...there is always in the backs of our minds the positive drive to go back again. If it were lush and rich, one could understand the pull, but it is fierce and hostile and sullen. The stone mountains pile up to the sky and there is little fresh water. But we know we must go back if we live, and we don't know why."

The Magic !

The sun and the moon...

...and the magic light they shed...on the sea, the sand, the mountains, the islands, the desert, and on the smiling faces of my neighbors and friends.

He ended up penning a few. I'm ashamed to admit I haven't even read half of them. Just finished The Wayward Bus. Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men and East of Eden are amazing, but I have to say my favorite so far is Cannery Row.

Cup of Gold : a Life of Sir Henry Morgan, Buccaneer, with Occasional Reference to History. 1929

The Pastures of Heaven. 1932

To a God Unknown. 1933

Tortilla Flat. 1935

In Dubious Battle. 1936

Of Mice and Men. 1937

The Red Pony. 1945

Their Blood Is Strong. 1938

The Long Valley. 1938

The Grapes of Wrath. 1939

Sea of Cortez : a Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research / by John Steinbeck and Edward F. Ricketts. 1941

The Forgotten Village. 1941

Bombs Away : the Story of a Bomber Team. 1942

The Moon Is Down. 1942

Cannery Row. 1945

The Pearl. 1947

The Wayward Bus. 1947

A Russian Journal. 1948

Burning Bright : a Play in Story Form. 1950

East of Eden. 1952

Viva Zapata! 1952

Sweet Thursday. 1954

The Short Reign of Pippin IV : a Fabrication. 1957

Once There Was a War. 1958

The Winter of Our Discontent. 1961

Travels with Charley : In Search of America. 1962

America and Americans. 1966

BAJA FREEDOM! Not that we aren't free back in the States , Canada or wherever. But there is another kind of freedom to be found here, freedom of a higher magnitude. If you choose a spot away from urban centers to lead your law abiding Baja life, you will almost never "interface" with the government in any form or at any level. You will hardly ever experience those tiny, niggling ticky-tacky irritations caused by citizen/government confrontations which tipify and in some cases dominate our lives up North. Generally speaking, you don't have to check the rules&regs, the laws&ordinances, or posted limitations before everything you do down here. You are free to take almost any reasonable course of action without first making sure ther is no "dumb" law against it. Baja Sun 1985??

Duh. My favorite is The Wayward Bus. With some carefully chosen big star talent, it would be a great movie, especially as an art film.

I have to go with Sunrises, sunsets, beaches, desert, food, fishing, cactus, roadrunners, cerveza, whales, the people, well I guess it would just be everything in between the border to Cabo, cause it would just take too long to name everything.

I like the lawlessness and the way people keep their noses out of each others business. Way too many laws and busy bodies up north.

************ I heard that garbage cans are bar coded in San Diego and if you don't separate trash into the correct can your breaking some kind of new freaking law. What, can the garbage man issue fines??

And no drinking beer on the beach?? Huh? What's wrong with those folks anyway?

Next they'll want to do a chemical analysis of your urine to see what you consume before they'll let you work. Wait, I guess they already do that.

Anyway, I like the live and let live attitude and the absence of laws governing behavior.
