Shari, are you trying to open a word 2007 document in word 2003 or older? is the word document you are trying to open one you created yourself or one that was emailed to you?

It's possible that the program was introductory and now you must possibly pay if it's a used machine .
If not did you resigter your"new" computer w/ MS online? If not that might help.

Think Sharks has nailed it. Word is part of Microsoft Office, not XP.

You can go to www.openoffice.org and download the openoffice writer and it will open the Word documents.

Or go to Google, and download a free copy of Star Office from Sun. It Also will open MS Word documents.

shari, try this:

In Windows Explorer find a .doc file, right click on it, and select "open with". A list will come up, and Microsoft Word should be on it. Click on "Microsoft Word" and see what happens.

What Lou said.... Word is a part of Office, not XP Pro... and also what Lou said fixes it.... really.

If you can copy the exact "error" message and post it here, I can help.

Another thing you can do is copy the error message straight into Google, and I'm sure you'll find some information on it.

Like others said, if you got Word pre-installed on a computer, it is most likely (90% +) a trail version. If this is the case, go and get yourself a copy of OpenOffice.
