New Breed of "turista"
and I use the term loosely. You've got the people that live in baja, those that spend most of their time in baja, those that frequent it a lot, those
that visit evey so often, those that drive down on weekends, those that make a trip once a year, and now you can add those that "will never come down
there again". I have run into so many people here in San Diego that since reading about "all the crime" that has been happening lately, will never
venture south again. It's as if they were just waiting for an excuse not to cross the border, and now they've got it. For someone like me who
frequents the Tijuana to Ensenada corridor for food, shopping, surf, relaxation, and all around general enjoyment, it's a good thing to not have a lot
of turista's milling about, but I feel sorry for the businesses in the area that are suffering and will continue to suffer because so many Americans
feel unsafe in baja.

Actually, fishing has improved at least 100% since all those people and their boats are staying north of the border. I think this place becomes more
dangerous by the hour and minute. I am doing my best with friends and anyone that asks about how danerous it is down here to fill them in on just
exactly how bad it has become.

Agree with them or not, these are the people who are affecting change in the level of security for tourists and expat residents in Baja. If the
dollar flow into the country had not been drastically reduced by fearful tourists going elsewhere, the new protective measures would never have been
put in place. It wasn't until the cash registers rang empty that the government decided to act. It had very little to do with safety.

Not surprising that U.S. citizens are reacting thusly, what we the constant barrage of messages they receive designed to keep them in a state of
perpetual fear. Anyone reported seeing Osama in Baja? Not yet? Just wait.
Use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without.

I know lots of people that are concerned about the violence. They'd be stupid not to be.
It's the border wait that keeps them and us from doing the daily trips we used to make.
That's about it. |
I'm heading down the 1st weekend in May, and that's the part of the trip I'm bracing myself for.

Ken....I'd have thought that you would have found a place to drive across quickly by now. You know, up and over a steep mountain or something.

Personally from what I've seen and heard, Americans have cut back on many luxuries. Travel to Europe is painful from the Euro standpoint. Gasoline
although cheaper in Mex has slowed potential travelers or shortened their trip.
I'd venture to say that violence is a major factor but it happened at a time when there is an economic problem in the U.S.
Even the Canadians are cooling off a tad, even though their dollar is worth........... a dollar! Probably more.

It's affecting me in Ventura also, the last big north swell I was out on the Santa Barbara pier watching the surf at sandspit. A guy and his son
pulled up, we started talking about the surf and I found out he was from San Diego. He said on big swells he usually went to baja to surf, but now
because of the lawlessness in baja he comes north.
