We're off on the road to Mexico
Hola Nomads, sounds like an old Hope/Crosby road flick huh? Anyway, Brad Farrow and
I leave tomorrow for points south. We meet up with the Mother Lode Chapter of
the Flying Samaritans on Friday afternoon in San Quintin, and have our clinic at
Los Pinos on Saturday the 12th. On Sunday morning we'll watch the Sams take off
and then head on south, stopping along the way at "Coco's Corner" in the desert
to evaluate Coco for another prosthesis. We'll do a little exploring along the
way and end up in La Paz for our clinic with the Rotarians down there by Friday
the 18th (so we can pick up others at the airport who are flying down). The
Rotarians have scheduled a Dorado Fishing Tournament on Sunday before we start
the clinic. The clinic will last about 2 weeks, then Brad and I will take the
ferry out of La Paz and over to Topolobampo on mainland Mexico. Hopefully we'll
be able to load the truck/camper on a flatbed railroad car and head off for the
Copper Canyon, about an 8 hour train ride, to the town of Creel. The train goes
from sea level to over 8000' elevation and through a canyon which is 4 times the
size of the Grand Canyon, covers some 25000 square miles, and is some 360'+
deeper than the Grand Canyon. We will offload the truck at Creel and drive
across the Sonoran desert to the Sea of Cortez, probably visiting San Blas, Kino
Bay, and Puerto Penasco before coming back into the USA. Anyway, I'll write you
all when we return and recap our adventures. Hasta luego, Paul

Paul,
We have been to Creel a number of times and have seen the RVs on the flatbeds. However, I may be wrong, but I think you can only do that trip with a
group and start at the other end---could be wrong.
Also I read somewhere that they were having problems continuing with that program.
One alternative is to drive to El Fuerte, a nicer town than Los Mochis. There is a campground there---can find the name for you if you want---where
you can leave your camper and take the passenger train to Creel and back.
In Creel, there are several places to stay---cheap to expensive. Then if you have time, I very much recommend a trip down into the canyon to
Batopilas. We drove that crazy road down, but there are vans and even local buses that go down there. We loved staying at Juanita's right in the
little town.
Just some suggestions---and I do recommend that if you want to see the area do it now. There have been some write-ups about possible big mega-resorts
for that area----yuk!

Consider driving to Alamos, east of Navajoa. Nice old mining town.
I'd pass on Penasco and Kino, but driving thru San Carlos, north of Guaymas, is very interesting. I know a few excellent boondocking spots that I
stayed at in my truck/camper last year.
Also. the towns of Siqueros and Concordia east of Mazatlan in the foothills of the Sierras are pretty interesting, too.
