Bernie left for La Paz this morning.
Alas, I got to spend not nearly enough time with him while he was in Los Barriles; On Saturday night He came to Baja Shakespeare's presention of 12th
Night, laughed plenty. On Sunday he cruised the art festival. He came by the house yesterday and had a good visit with me and the grandkids. I had
dinner with him at Tio Pablos last night. He has promised to return to Los Barriles someday, I hope he will stay longer and of course come back to us
the sooner the better. It was so wonderful to see him after all these years, never get enough Bernie, ni modo.

Bernie arrived safe, but weary in La Paz today. Planning to meet him manana to break bread & relieve him of the weight of some books he
complained about having to haul around in his suitcase! I expect he'll be making an unscheduled appearance at the Ana-ual Flan-athon on Saturday at
BMG's!

Maybe somebody told them that REAL MEN don't like flan OR quiche! I promise to sample everything that I'm not told beforehand contains chile! Hmmmmmm.....not positive, but I think Bernie's flying
home after La Paz.

Come to think of it, I like everything.
Glad to hear that Bernie will be coming. Doesn't like flan huh? I think there may be laws about that in Mexico.

Tequila liqueur & Mescal liqueur
Don’t know how I missed this post but I did and I have been remiss in not responding in a timely manner.
Met a bunch of really wonderful folks in La Paz—one total stranger stopped me and suggested that I should learn to ‘walk on the SHADY side of the
street.’ I was on the sunny side because I was photographing Nomad Jesse’s beautiful restaurant—don’t miss it or him if you land in La Paz. Just
bring a bunch of pesos.
The flan party found me in the company of some really fun folks—all of whom just could not believe that I was not inhaling the flan as most of them
seemed to be doing. I will admit that the white flan, shaped like cookies, did cause me to pause. .
Anyway, our hostess Ana, beautiful lady, came to the rescue when she brought out a decanter, a shot glass, and poured me something that I didn’t
even know existed. A wonderfully smooth, sipping Tequila Liqueur. Sip I did! Great stuff! Steve, her husband, not to be out done followed this
offering with a Mescal Liqueur. Fantastic!
Enjoyed the flan fans but I’ll take what these great folks poured over flan every time.
Only in Baja! Someone at the party, lost my notes so I don’t know who, asked me if I could mail some ‘stuff’ for him when I got back to the states.
He was kinda of interested on when my plane would land in San Diego and when I told him April 14th he smiled. The next morning the desk lady at La
Perla Hotel gave me the package he had left for me—his tax returns—they were mailed with time to spare.
PS If you get to La Paz make arrangements to have longlegs show you around. She has a special greeting that will identify you for her. No, I won’t
say what it is—ask her. Thanks again to Carol and all the rest of you folks that made this stop much more than worthwhile.

Please tell us about the La Perla.
We have had brunch at their sidewalk cafe many times but have never had the opportunity to stay there or see the rooms.

First let me say that I really pigged out on the fruit plates and octopus c-cktails they serve in the restaurant and the scene is ever changing and
most fun. Asked Francisco, a waiter, if they ‘ever’ had any clouds in the sky. He told me that was the only thing he misses in La Paz—325 days a
year of no clouds—only sun.
The staff at La Perla are fantastic and most friendly. Bear in mind that this place was built with I was barely four years old so modern you could
not call it. No AC that I noticed but cooling breezes all day. Very well maintained, I was on the third floor and the place is terraced so that most
rooms, except the garden rooms around the courtyard have no view except for the pool, Jacuzzi, and the fountain. Beautiful white pigeons at the
fountain all day. My view from my room was great.
One of the most important things in a hotel room, for me, is a good strong, hot shower................and there the place got an A+.
I’ll probably stay there again next year unless the local Nomads can recommend something else closer to the working part of the city. And one that
has a good shower. Don’t mind sweating but I sure hate sleeping in my own grime.

Sipping stuff
Ana just gave me the names of that great sipping stuff.....
The Tequilla Liquer is called Agavero (available just about anywhere) and the Mescal Liquer is Maracuyo La Crema del mezcal which I believe is only
sold where Oaxacan stuff might be bought.

Bernie You need to bring a bottle to the tequila tasting May 3rd after the booksigning
