Nomad Golf Tourney & Fiesta NEWS & REVIEWS

The response to this fundraiser has been fantastic! Thanks to all of you who have already purchased your advance tickets! This is promising to be a most excellent event with great food, drink, fun, music and more. So for those of you attending here are some details. If you haven't already ponied up for your ticket, it's $12 USD or $120 pesos at the door. $10 USD in advance. Advance is VERY IMPORTANT because we want to make sure we have enough food and libations.

The Fiesta will take place at the OLD Clubhouse. When you enter the property and pass through the security gate, continue STRAIGHT. Follow that road. You'll pass by a few completed homes and some under construction. Keep going. When you see lots of balloons and a gazebo shaped building on your left, you have arrived! Plenty of parking either on the street or on the dirt right up against the fence surrounding the "clubhouse".

The Fiesta will start at 1:00 p.m. We encourage you to arrive on time so you don't miss a thing! We will be having a silent auction for some truly great items so don't forget your checkbook! Along with the Silent Auction, there will be drawings going on throughout the day for even more super prizes. One drawing ticket is included in your admission ticket, but when you see the prizes you'll want to buy many more! Your admission ticket also gets you a food ticket and two tickets for the beverage of your choice. Additional beverage tickets may by purchased ($1 for non-alcoholic drinks, $2 for beer and wine tickets).

Did we mention to bring your checkbook? This is to support such a worthy cause, Agua Viva Guarderia. In the coming weeks, you'll be reading a lot more about this wonderful facility on this message board (because next we will be recruiting volunteers to occasionally help out there!)

And if you are coming from Calif Alta, PLEASE CONTACT GROVER! He has many, many bikes to get delivered to "our kids".....that means YOUR kids,, our BAJA kids! If you can just bring down one that's great. Check his separate post for details.

Today's tourney and fiesta were a GREAT success and to be honest, I'm too exhausted to even start on it. Just a quick thank you to NOMADS who participated in any way (and FDT, I DID win the tamale cook-off, even if by default!). Fabulous people, great foods, excellent music (the Mariachi were WOW!), great prizes for the silent auction (you won't believe what you missed out on), and super-duper drawing prizes. Our $$$ numbers are still being synced by KPMG Peat Marwick so look forward to a post on $$$ raised and lots of photos of our fun!

Just received this newsletter from Agua Viva. You can see just how much they need our support!

Spring has finally come to Mexico after a very long, cold winter. Although still pretty cool most mornings & evenings, the hills are green and wildflowers are bursting forth on every hillside & field. Thankfully, we did not suffer near as bad as most as we had a couple of propane space heaters to take the some of the chill off the early morning and evening hours. Other than some mild coughing and sniffles our in house kids stayed fairly healthy through it all.

We want to thank all of you who have been praying for Ismael. His leukemia is now in remission, praise God! He and his family are still staying with Pastor Juan in Rosarito but are looking forward to returning to their new home built by a huge number of the Lord's saints under the direction of Steve Poppert of Cornerstone Ministries.

It has been a while since we've reported on Elena so we just want everyone to know that she continues to be healthy. God bless all of you that pulled together to get the family relocated to the community next door so we could better monitor her & she could remain with her family. It has been almost a year now since she has shown any signs of getting "sick" again.

The kids are all doing well in school. Not only are Gloria & Julio learning to read but they are reading in English as well! Karla was home for spring break and of course, she is doing well in college( 4.0 GPA ) despite being in a foreign country. Above All Else Ministries has been sponsoring Karla but they do need your help to continue to do so. College is very expensive but what a blessing to watch as she continues to strive to be all she can be, not only for herself but as an example to many younger children of poverty who are watching her example. Please ask us for information about how to help sponsor her or Dolores who will be attending university here in Mexico this next semester.

Daycare is running smoothly under the watchful eye of Jodie. She has recently committed to being here at least until the end of the year. Mark continues to make headway with the children he works with and has added another child, Luis, who he works with on a regular basis.

We are praying for a van for Mark to better facilitate the transportation of the handicapped children he works with. Our van is down, waiting for transmission repair. He just recently received needed portable ramps to use to put the one child he works with, that is in a wheelchair, into the van. Without the use of a van, he must lift the child who weighs at least 100 pounds from the wheelchair into & out of the pickup to transport him. Some days his back tells him exactly how much he's lifting!

We have recently combined efforts with Connie to get all the children in the community to attend the feeding program in one location only; here at Agua Viva. During the really cold times when very few parents were working we were feeding 130 children breakfast & lunch daily! We never dreamed the program would mushroom the way it has so on some days it really has been "fishes & loaves". Since more parents are working now the numbers have dropped to less than that but our food creativity is really being stretched!! Our cook has adapted well to the extra work & numbers. The Lord sent us a wonderful volunteer, Christina, who assists her in preparation & clean up. Thank you to Sharing The Harvest for bringing another large van full of canned food just when we needed it and to MCCA for their willingness to make adjustments in our bulk food quantities.

We have many summer projects lined up to keep everyone busy that has expressed a desire to come and lend a helping hand where needed. We are asking for your prayers and help with the finances to bring some of these projects to completion this year. Rancho Vista has told us if we can raise the finances for the cement slab for the 4 room addition that they will commit to the next $4,000 to $5,000 of building materials & provide laborers during June & July. The cost of the cement slab is $3,000. We have been told the total price to build the addition should be about $12,000. We are also praying that the kitchen/dining room project will also be completed this year. These seem to be mighty big projects but we are putting our faith in a mighty big God to see them all to completion.

We will soon be posting our project list on our brand new website!! Thanks to Randal for building it for us. We'll also be posting some photos soon so please visit the website. The address is: http://www.aguavivadc.com We welcome any suggestions and please, leave us a note on the "blog". (Not long ago we didn't even know what a "blog" was!!)

We all, Jon & I, volunteer staff & kids thank you for your continued prayers, support and many acts of kindness & love extended to us. We thank you for your e-mails and your words of encouragement. For those of you who have put your own lives on hold to answer the call of the Lord to come and lend a hand, even for just a day, we are grateful.

Jon & Arlene

The tournament was excellent! I know it took a lot of time and effort to coordinate all of the many details for this, so a big round of applause for everyone that helped to put it together. It was great to finally meet some more Nomads in person too....bajaguy, bajadock, lizard lips and sylens. The course looked and played great and we thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it. I look forward to hearing how much money was raised for Agua Viva.

I will have my photos up soon as well....

I guess I have been in never never land as the first I heard about the tournament was 2 days before it happened.

I looked in the events forum but could find nothing. If this is held again next year I would hope it is more visible and announced long in advance.

I tell ya, la, it was tough! But since you singlehandedly raised about $200 in five minutes on sheer enthusiasm, it was worth the effort. Speaking of singlehanded, Jeans did a great job kneading the bundles of dough called "Dennis" and "BigMike." And she contributed every penny of a hard afternoon's work to the cause.

I thought there was going to be a whole new thread on this but I'll just add to this one. It was a wonderful event, the food was good the entertainment was good and all the people there were great. We met even more nomads. We will be at the next one also. What a great way to help the children. Thanks to all of you who worked so hard to make that day soooo much fun........Linda

Thanks to all who attended, volunteered, encouraged and sponsored NOMADS4NIŅOS 2008.

167 food tickets were redeemed on April 5. We know that the total attendance exceeded that number. Many of our volunteers, including the chefs, involuntarily began dieting that day.

Over $5,000 in profits were raised for the children of Agua Viva Guarderia. Our sponsors are listed on following link (please see the "blog" section). We appreciate your patronizing our sponsors' products and services.

Baja Country Club is a very challenging track at 6,800+ yds from back tees. Palm trees, water hazards, doglegs, hills, cactus and golfing skill can get in the way.

Great job by Lizard Lips organizing the tourney. His little idea of getting some nomads together for golf turned into a grand event, fun fiesta and big financial success for local kids.
