Border musings

I almost let my Sentri card expire. Like many here, I had been traveling the peninsula for a long time. Weekend trips to Estero Beach. Whale watching in San Ignacio. Beachcombing in San Quintin, followed by world-class inebriation at Cielito Lindo. Having the good fortune to swim with a whale shark in BOLA. Doing a whole lot of nothing in Loreto.

And then I got divorced. And my kids grew up. And I read stories of assaults, robberies and other Baja atrocities that made me think it wasn’t worth it anymore. I still haven’t quite gotten past Raquel Fife’s murder, as I was there just before it happened. So why bother. My mother was going to have a coronary if I kept going back.

So I didn’t. For a long time. And then I met someone. Born, raised and living in Tijuana, educated in the States – a true “border girl”, as she likes to call herself. And so my Baja odyssey resumed. A cautious yet strangely calming first crossing for dinner at a tapas place no tourist could dream of discovering. A not-so-calming return home in the wee hours past the contrasting throngs of federal soldiers and local police.

And thus my affair with Mexico has begun anew. Ice cream with chile. Sunset at Punta Piedra. A concert with Argentine poet and balladeer Facundo Cabral at the old Jai Alai arena. Lobster where the locals go at Puerto Nuevo. And parties where many cheeks are kissed and men still stand and pull the chair out for their wives in reverence.

Born-again to Baja. Very cool.

I recall my frame of mind when I first started my Baja experience. It was a completely different world, much more simple than today. I was the same way. Everything was a discovery, an adventure. From home, it was a two hour drive to heaven.
I miss that feeling. Baja and I have gotten older and it's so different, so crowded and much less peaceful. Oh well.......

Like any failed relationship, it is easy to only remember the bad things, and forget the good . . .
