Dog Stories - Great Danes in Baja

The breeder told us that he was going to put down the one-eyed merlequin puppy that he couldn't sell.

Also, our friend wanted wanted a puppy for her family to protect them from the kidnappings that are rampant in the TJ area (her brother was kidnapped and returned unharmed a few months ago).

Well, we went to pick up one puppy and came home with two.

The two new puppies were very seriously underweight and the merlequin was sick with Parvo. He started vomiting and stopped eating. After six days of round-the-clock medications and gavage feedings, he started eating on his own again.

Good luck with your pups. Glad to hear the one pulled through the Parvo. You must have caught it in time. Did you also have their hearing checked? Just a thought, as sometimes Danes can have hearing problems if they already have issues with their eyes. My sister has been through all of this with her Danes.

Do you have photos????

The Merlequin Puppy

has good hearing (his ears are pigmented).

The recessive eye also works in some manner, we just don't know how well. He runs around and through obstacles without problems. His good eye is blue.

Boy, being underweight and surviving parvo----you must have given that pup some really extra special care.

We will keep really positive thoughts for those fur babies. Danes are wonderful dogs. Good Luck

Dog is god spelled backward.

The semi-one-eyed sick puppy gave me complete trust. After alll the stuff I shoved down his throa around the clock - he didn't take it personally.

Right now, he is scampering around the garden with his sister.

When I think about life, this is one of my happiest memories -iwo healthy puppies playing together.

Yea, we agree with the god spelled backwards. BTW, don't know where you live, but there are some VETS in El Centro California who are really good with dealing with parvo. They even have a special room for treating babies with parvo. They are at the El Centro Animal Clinic.

There is so much parvo in that area, especially along the border. When we adopted our little street dog, ,Maggie at around 5 or 6 months old, he restricted her to our house and backyard in Calexico until she had ALL of her parvo shots.

Keep up the good work---oh, I had a friend who had two Great Danes and made the mistake of making one of them a real lap dog as a puppy---:lol:

Damn, this thread about Danes got me all sentimental. Here's Tasha, my dear old friend, and a GREAT Baja dog. She loved running on the beach, all the smells, all the attention. They just don't last long enough.

Ken,

Life is always of the moment.

Dogs live in the moment and they teach me.

I am grateful for the lessons.

As you can see, we "dog people" come out in support. I wish your fur baby much luck in recovery.

My father raised Great Danes and showed them. Yes, they think they are lap dogs. That could hurt, if ya know what I mean. :O

Dogs make me happy and I go around looking like this guy>>>>
