It is correct to use the article for a territory, i.e.; The Yukon Territory. It is not correct for a state or nation.

Is that the final word or will this thread expire from over-bloatedness at a later date? |

I’m trying to give this thread new life through artificial insemination.

Caveat: I hope the Moderators agree that it is ok since the schools teach this too.
Edit: Changing from Censors to Moderators.

But "The Baja", as it's used in a general sense is a territory or region consisting of two states: Baja California and Baja California Sur. We don't
say The Baja California because it's a specific state but isn't saying "The Baja" equivalent to saying "The South" or "The West" in the U.S.?
Just for the record, the words are never uttered from my mouth.

In Los Angeles there are the "La Brea" tar pits, on Wilshire Blvd. Every school kid had to study them and take a field trip there. These geographic
features have always been called "The La Brea Tar Pits".
Now, if you translate that, it is: "The the tar tar pits".
Chew on that one.

Just my 2pesos-
Baja Norte and Sur are two separate states, which most infrequent travelers don't understand. The Baja peninsula is a geographic region. I would
like to hear "peninsula" included with the words "THE Baja".
To be correct wouldn't we have to say-
1) "I'm traveling to Baja California Sur" or
2) "I'm traveling to Baja Norte"
3) "I'm traveling to THE Baja peninsula"???
If I hear a person say "I'm going to see THE New York", to me it means that person has a preconcieved idea of what New York will be and look like.
When someone say's "I'm going to the Indy"... do you think of the city or the race?
The same goes for Baja. When I hear "I'm traveling to THE Baja" I think of the race, some other event, not a place. When advertisers say "Visit the
Baja of your dreams", that's not necessarily a place because dreams are different for everyone as everyone's "ideal Baja" is different.
Maybe we can all take the gentle teacher approach and gently correct anyone who says "THE Baja" inappropriatly. A simple explanation that "THE Baja"
should include "peninsula", otherwise it's refering to the region and should not include "THE".............

Dennis! Are you begging for mercy or bragging?
Just to keep it on track with the topic I would like to contemplate (the) Baja life after (the) Baja sex. To put it another way ; have (the) Baja
afterlife launched by (the) Baja sex. This way, (the) death is merely a means to a happy ending; anti-climatic, if you will.

The state is Baja California - there is no "Norte" in the name.

You know when one says Baja Norte, all he means is 'NOT Baja Sur'... as in 'I'm going to Baja Norte'. Because if he says he is going to 'Baja'... then
that means the whole peninsula, and maybe he wants to specify just the northern half?
Like in L.A. Bay in the old days, Antero Diaz loved to be called 'Papa'... but his wife Cruz did NOT like to be called 'Mama' by strangers, only by
her children... The problem was, where there is a Papa then there's got to be a Mama! (Cruz eventully succumbed to the constant refrence and accepted
she was famous as Mama Diaz).
So, where there is a Baja Sur, then there must be a Baja Norte to balance things out! Yes, officially the north half has no 'Norte' in the name. Kind
of like Virgina and West Virginia!

Just saying "La Baja" makes Baja sound like a romantic place you want to be.
I would never say "The Baja."

I believe that "The Baja" dates back to the late 1500's at which time the Spaniards thought that the penninsula of Baja California was actually an
island, and referred to it in awe as "El Baja"---------so you see, it actually is a historical term.
Being a sort of historical guy (like Neal Johns), I like that name.

Much too late for this thread to die a dignified death but. a merciful one is in order.
Please, HoseA, would you take it out behind the barn and shoot it? It's time. Everybody say bye bye.
