Delta to end Loreto flights mid-August

Was having trouble booking a return flight on Delta and found this on the LA Times website:

Several routes to Mexico are being temporarily suspended or eliminated altogether. According to Delta spokesperson Anthony L. Black, starting in mid-August 2008, Loreto (LTO) and Manzanillo (ZLO) will no longer be serviced by Delta flights from LAX. These are permanent cancellations.

http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/index.php/delta-to-cut-flights-2089/

On Alaska, I'm only finding flights 3 days a week (Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday).

Seems Continental is also suspending their Houston/LTO route from late July 2008 until May 2009.

You might be able to fly back from Asuncion or Guerrero Negro depending on the dates and if they have seats available with Cedros Outdoor Adventures. They are flying in for fishing and often have seats available. They fly to Ensenada and then drive you in a van to san diego.

all this while LTO continues mega work on their new terminal expansion!

timing......i think they missed it.
and why is that terminal about 3 Xs bigger than any one in the states for a town double size of LTO's populace?

some one at Fonatur sees the future i guess. maybe the future is high speed trains.

cracks me up. that LTO terminal, the current one, is a ghost shack except for the occasional USA flights on those sparse days. they needed a new terminal like ones needs a 3rd ear. now they have to contend with furloughs due to high jet-A $$s and reduced travel demand.

The old terminal was not big enough....not with all three major flights (Delta, Alaska and Continental) arriving within an hour of each other.

They needed either to space out the arrivals and departures, or to add 1000 square feet, max, to the arrival and baggage claim area.

We were out there one evening and the solar powered street lights in the new parking lot were working! Hooray! But the lot remains closed until the opening of the new terminal, scheduled for fall, according to the rumor mill. Hope there is a flight to use it. Maybe Aero Calafia.

And it looks like Alaska prices will start at about 500 clams, LAX-LTO round trip.

Capt. Mike. looks as if I might have to buy an Airplane and get Current if I need to go Fishing in Loreto.
Driving from Texas takes 2 and 1/2 Days. Too Long for me!

Know anybody with a good Taildragger they will sell Cheap?

Prefer High wing-1`72 with a Lyc. 180, !82 with long range tanks. Of Course a 170B would be my first Choice.

issue and start looking. with gas at $5-6 now stateside many are throwing in the towel. of couse its a buck or 2 cheaper in mexico cause they don't add in all the taxes USA does but it still ain't cheap - but there's no better way to travel as you know so yeay git yurself A 170B and cruise on down.
my partner jest got a sweet 180 w a fresh O-470 for $60K, less than for a new loaded Cadaverlac Espillade.

I just received the following message from Alaska:

"Alaska will be discontinuing flights to Loreto; however, our sister carrier Horizon will take over that route."

I'm sorry that Delta is discontinuing the route. The connection from LAX to SFO is way better. You get in almost 2 hours earlier.

Wow. Anyone have thoughts on what it means that Horizon is taking over the route from Alaska?

Horizon has already been doing some of the flights. I flew back from Loreto in early June on one of those flights. It was good...smaller plane...free beer and wine!

I think that what it all means is that the large Alaska planes were not full all the time, they can fill the smaller Horizon planes, and the fuel costs will be lower. Just my guess!

This makes sense to me. Alaska has many flights that are less than half full. Horizon flies a smaller jet and uses less fuel. Also, many passengers on Alaska were brought in by Loreto Bay to visit and buy they crappy units they are selling in Nopolo. Too bad though, as Alaska was a good airline and were on time. So goes the expression, build it and they will come.

Alaska filed for permission to make the change stating that their Horizon brand allowed them to operate smaller planes.

So it will result in a further decrease in available seats to Loreto.

We have used Horizon service for years from Montana to Washington and Oregon. Good planes and crews.
