Graffiti
I have lived in Ensenada for the last 22 years just about 1 mile south of the center of town in a nice area with middle class homes that have been
plagued by recent robberies.
Just this morning I saw that someone has tagged my home with graffiti. I had heard that some gangs have done this to inform it's members that this
home could be easily robbed, has a dog and don't rob it, or some other meaning. The graffiti that was on my wall is not big and only has a few letters
and a number. It could be just the gang sign or mean what I had mentioned.
Has anyone heard of this before? I am going to contact a friend at the police station tomorrow but I though that one of you may have some information
regarding this.

My son-in-law works for a Sheriffs team targeting gang crime and told me about this months ago. I will see if I can get a copy of the signs and their
meanings from him. When I do I will pass it along to you.
In the meantime just get a picture of it and paint over it.

Most of the time the graffiti that has a few letters and a number is a gang name. They mark their territory like a dog marks a tree.
In Los Angeles you see graffiti like "18st" which is the 18th Street gang, or "MS13", which is Mara Salvatrucha.
If you see the same lettering all over in a specific area, it means that particular gang "owns" that territory and anybody that wants to "work" crimes
in that area, like drug dealing, stealing, etc. owes that gang "tribute' to let them work the area.

That is true but there are also some "new" burglary related tags that are specific for houses with info like no dog, no alarm, gone during the day,
owner away, house vacant, good stuff-come back, etc.
I had heard about this going on up in the states so I guess it was just a matter of time until it worked its way down south...

If Bajagringo can just get a guide to these, then everyone could get a painted sign that says no dog, and then ave a big rotweiler in residence and
maybe we can figure out how to paint OOPS.

I moved down here from an area that has fought a mighty battle against tagging. We learned a few things ....
1. Take a picture of the "artwork"
2. Paint or erase it as soon as possible.
Removing it quickly is the only way to slow it down. It is kind of dissapointing to them to not be able to drive by later and see their scheiss.
As to meanings of tags ... it has been common practice in California to tag a house for either squating or purposes of burglery.
That's all I can offer, other than restricting sales of spray paints seems to help, and sentencing the culprits to many hours of community
service painting over grafitti

Our house was tagged last week along with neighbors on both sides of us. Ours was painted immediately and is fine. The neighbors, on the other hand,
did not paint and have continued to get tagged since then with more grafitti.

Dan,
That is not good news about your house getting tagged.
Our little neighborhood across the bay from you has also been discussing security issues. Hope you and your neighbors can come up with some
discouragement for miscreants.

Thanks for the info.
A beautiful home around the corner has a large white wall surrounding the property and it is completely full of their ugly art work. They have painted
the wall no less than 20 times and it continues to be tagged. They just gave up. If you paint the wall white then they use black paint and if you
paint it black they use light colors. Oh well.....There isn't much we can do unless someone installs a video camera then what? Maybe something worse
will happen next time.
So now my morning will include painting and a photo. By the way I do have a big dog and a security system and a baseball bat as well as pepper spray
and a tazer.
Sometimes I think if you let your home go in need of repair, paint etc. then you are less likely to be bothered. Who knows? At least thats what I tell
my wife when she says that the home needs a good paint job.
My neighbor across the street had an intruder that came into his home through a side door and walked into their kitchen as they were having dinner. He
was a very big guy and a fight ensued. My neighbor got the best of him and this guy ran from the home and as he was running down the street he ran
into a telephone pole and was knocked out. All of my neighbors and me held him down until the police came and as they were taking him away he look at
us and said he would be back and kill us all. What a bonehead but this could have gone really bad.
I would like to start a neighborhood watch program here in Ensenada. I wonder if it would be possible?

top of the wall ... really shut them down fast

Note: This might not be effective with the low water pressure in La Paz .... when you receive you ration every other day .... OMG the sprinkler
wouldn't work down here.

Graffiti annoys the hell out of me I can't believe the nerve of these pricks to
paint on someone else's property to mark THEIR territory (like these ingrates OWN anything)
I think a public campaign should be started to humiliate these taggers something like:

Post stuff like that up in as many places as possible. Or plant news stories saying graffiti is a secret code for the guys that love gay sex...
Over the years I've done a couple different things to combat graffiti in my neighborhood. I find that painting over it as fast as possible is probably
the best. But putting signs around the property saying "WARNING All Activities are Recorded on Video Tape To Aid In The Prosecution Of Any Crime
Committed Against This Facility" have worked great for me.
Other fun things I've done have been:
I made up some big posters saying;
"If your mother is a cheap hoar, sign below like these idiots"
I put those up high on the walls that were getting covered with graffiti.
Last year I started seeing tags from someone signing "JTS" when he hit my house I decided to return the favor. One night, I sprayed "JTS" in his
style, over a nice Virgin Mary mural (off limits to taggers) as well as on a couple Narco houses in the area (you know the ones, big nice houses with
white walls & NEVER one sign of graffiti) even the police sub-delegation down the way...
Well I guess someone handed JTS his ass cause I haven't seen any new tags from him in a while

I had some businesses near downtown Los Angeles that where in an area claimed by the "18th Street Gang". They would tag everthing in sight with all
sorts of variations of their name. One of the more common tags was to write "Diesiocho", which is Spanish for "18".
One night I changed their tag to "Diespocho's".

Just painted over the fine artwork after taking a photo. Now it will be interesting if it gets done again. Maybe I should have left it up. It may have
meant a real BAD ASSSSS LIVES HERE.
And thanks for idea of putting up that device Doug but it would pee off all of the beggers that routinely come by every day!

I agree that removing it is the best move. We have gotten tagged only once here in Mexico....and my husband immediately covered it with paint and
that was it.

I have to answer "yes" to your question!
We've lived in Idaho, it's cold there, it snows and even in the summer the rivers are so cold your private parts go numb.
In the states it is hard to find a really great shrimp taco, entire families don't head out for a walk in the evening and it is a joy to see that
children are children, not spoiled, whining and fussing over stupid "stuff".
I remember coming to Mexico to see family every Christmas since I was a kid and I could not get over the garbage everywhere. That has changed so much
over the years and I really hope the grafitti will go the same direction.
Not ready to give up on Baja.
