Man vs Wild Baja Desert
Did anyone see Man vs Wild on Discovery Channel Wednesday night? Bear Grylls was crossing the desert on foot in northern Baja. I thought things got
tough for Bear when he had to kill a skunk with a knife and eat it. But no, that was a minor inconvenience. Later his eyes swelled close when he was
stung in the face by a bee from whose hive he was pilfering honey, followed by a few scenes in which he killed a rattlesnake, carefully removed the
meat from the skin without puncturing it, saved the intact skin into which he later urinated, carried the snake skin around his neck as a sort of
serpentine canteen, and yes, later, when facing dehydration, held the snakeskin above his head Hawaiian coconut style and proceeded to drink the
entire tube of urine. And I get bummed out when I'm down there and can't find a cold Diet Coke.

I saw Bear in that episode tonight.
It was fun seeing Baja and hearing his commentary on it's deadliness and ruggedness. As usual, I was really grossed out several times, especially at
the thought of him drinking his own urine. It was also interesting to see how much the Rattler's body kept moving after being beheaded. I always had
heard about that happening, but had never witnessed it.

I don't know him or seen the show but if there was a film crew filming him things were not as they appear to be. Unless he drinks his urine on a
regular basis I doubt he was drinking it for the show.

I liked the ending when one minuet he in in the salt flats and the next he is tearing off his shirt to jump into the Sea of Cortez. I would have
hitched a ride when I came to the Mexicali/ San Felipe highway...

The whole "man vs this or that" concept is silly. The camera crew is standing by
with cold beer and munchos.

I did catch last nights season 3 opening episode and of course there is a supporting crew, and disclaimers run on the screen stating they are
available in case of emergencies. Bear is from the British Special Forces and is one tough and knowledgable dude concerning survival techniques.
They can't fake alot of the live stuff he eats on the show and in this episode if they faked his face swelling up from the bee sting they did a good
job. Anything shown on TV needs to be viewed with your own subjective filters. I personally don't think I am that gullible, but my vote is that he
did indeed drink his own urine. There was an episode of surviorman once where he peed into a bottle and brought it up and drank it without a stoppage
in filming also.

Drinking one's own urine is not all that uncommon. Besides dong it to avoid dehydration, some people do it because they believe it improves their
health. Others do it, I believe, for religious reasons. I remember many years ago watching on 60 Minutes an interview with the leader of India (It was
a man-I forget his name- his title was Prime Minister or something like that). In this interview he acknowledged that he regularly drank his own
urine. It's more common than one might think.
