bajagrouper, I caught that missing Hwy. 5 also.

The explanation is simple - there is a new 4wd route from Laguna Salada east to the Vermilion Sea that somehow misses crossing the highway! We just haven't found it yet. I saw it on TV so it has to be true!:lol::lol:

I think the dude on "Survivorman" uses his own camera and is actually alone in those locations (theoretically) . . .

Hola Neal, I thought he would end his trip by stumbling into the El Dorado Ranch Estates and buying a lot, then running into the water and stepping on a sting ray, I enjoy my c-cktails sin sal...

Cypress, thanks to you and others who have welcomed me. Much of what I have been reading here has been inspiring me to get my "butt in gear" and renew Baja travels that I have neglected for too long.
In regard to that Survivorman guy, Les Stroud. He's a Canadian, I believe, with a background in music, and yes, he does travel by himself. He sets up cameras around his campsites or when he is walking he often carries a long stick with a camera mounted on it and pointed back at himself so he can look into and talk into the camera.

lorin,
He records his "journeys" with a camera on a stick? PT Barnum would have eaten you for lunch.

The survivor dude is really dumb. He should have carried food and water with him on his Baja trip, and done it during cool weather. Drinking his pee, when he could have carried a bottle of Sparklets pure spring water. Dumb bunny. Survivor man aint too smart, and the people who watch his show may be even less smart.

Basicly, I thought it was cool. As an old mountaineer and someone who has been trained in wilderness survival I often have a problem about Bear's decisions.

For one.. He always seems to find some cliff that he needs to scale. This is B.S. .. walk around it, etc.. find another way.. 30 minutes spent walking around it will save your life. A twisted ankle or splatted body does nothing for you..

Also.. I found it funny he found a wire and new looking car seat in a 50 year old truck. Did you notice that absolutely nothing else was in the truck, ... those items were planted.

Otherwise.. it was entertaining.. though I'd spend more time finding water and civilization than I would finding skunks.. If Bear followed his own rules.. he would too.

I may watch the show and I may not be too smart. but I think you're having trouble following the train of thought in the thread. Survivorman (Les Stroud, who travels alone) is not the guy who drank his urine. Survivorman is a different show. Bear Grylls is the guy who was crossing Baja and drank his urine on the show Man vs Wild. He travels with a camera crew.

Neither one of those guys is really on the up and up as far as I have researched it, but Da Bear just delights in running full tilt down talus and scree slopes, climbing cliffs when he doesn't need to, and all manner of things that a normal person wouldn't think of doing to reduce their chance of survival if lost in the woods.

I liked Les' float in the Carrib and landing on the Belizian Island. In '91 I hired a guy to strand me on an empty island like that for 8 days. (Ranguana Cay) I had a great time.

besides the Hollywood factor, both of these "survivor-ist" TV show try to demonstrate extreme measures any normal person can do to survive in whatever situation they might be in.

Yea...climbing and jumping off the cliffs etc....may be over done for the tv factor, but the basics of eating a grub or ants may save the life of someone who wanders off the trail or breaks down out the boonies.............or how about digging down for water and then using charcoal and grass to filter the water so you don't get the s#!)s from contaminated water?

sound like it could POSSIBLY happen to anyone in this community............................................................................................................................................. .............?

Take it for what it is and try to get a little education from the shows

Earth to Nomads!!!....Earth to Nomads!!!

Hello!!!!!!

It's called a production crew if you didn't know. They help "make" movies that people might believe.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing to promote survival.

Remember though that, save being impaled by a stingray. all goes to plan, normally. Yep, right down to guzzling urine.

Now, I see some entertainment value for sure. They incorporate lots of nasty predicaments. Lots of logical remedies.

But give me a break, a guy who understands coping and dealing with the harsh elements like a bonafide survivalist doesn't run across the desert dunes without water at 12 noon.

Rather they would "make" their own water during the day and travel at night. Remember he has a "survival pack" to make fire yo cook snake..

I find the hyped premise is overstated and also potentially dangerous to heed or otherwise emulate this jerk.

It's all sensationalism and geared to get dumbchits to think you could survive behaving like he does.
Don't believe it, it's all Hollywood.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

These films are made by pros. If you feel good about watching them it's probably because they have done a good job producingf them.

One more thing. Anybody so tuned in as this dork is supposed to be would most certainly carry an epi-pen or equivalent to prevent aniphylactic shock from bee stings like he's allergic to.

I'd guess a bet that he DID have to take a antidote.:wow:

I sure am glad Vagabundo see the reality!;D

They can't fake alot of the live stuff he eats on the show and in this episode if they faked his face swelling up from the bee sting they did a good job. Anything shown on TV needs to be viewed with your own subjective filters. I personally don't think I am that gullible, but my vote is that he did indeed drink his own urine. There was an episode of surviorman once where he peed into a bottle and brought it up and drank it without a stoppage in filming also.

With todays computer editing systems you can make anything into anything. The graphics can be manipulated and morphed into looking like a smooth transistion. Don't believe what you always see on TV, it may or may not be what it appears.

I too have heard of people bathing and drinking their urine. It, I believe, is practiced in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
