The end of an era

or why J.R. is up at 2:30 am.
OK PEOPLE, I met with some people in Rosarito this afternoon. It was supposed to be good news which it was for our personal purposes.
Unfortunately, for those of you who know Playa Requeson, (my favorite dog photo!), by this time next year, the beginnings of a "Club Med" type resort will be filling that sand spit area and a marina will be going into the north bay area. Privately. No Escalera Nautica !
It is being done by a Mexican with a Mexican corporation and it is the worst news I have ever heard regarding Baja.
He is very influential in Baja and will succeed in his endeavors.
Baja is pretty much done as some of us knew it.
Now where will we go to see Baja? Thrown together Baja Emergency Guides?, Calenders?, Ian Documentaries?, or Slide Shows by DK????
Viva Capitalism! Adios Baja!!

Great news. that's a great place for some infrastructural

improvement. hope it works out. the area needs a marina badly. and some options for staying around concepcion. What's wrong with the concept of this individual, a mexican, having a dream and experiencing free enterprize? It's their country, not ours!

Again....markets rule!

Have you seen the plan? who's to say he's not doing it eco friendly?

Yep development happens.
I have fond memories of camping as a kid at the Sand Spit, and the Estero, south of Ensenada in the early 70's....Then the developers came. I have not been back since the construction of the buildings began at La Bufadora. :(
Luckily, there is still a lot of Baja that is as undeveloped as it was before Baja was "discovered" by the Spanish. And because of the lack of water, will probably remain that way for several generations.

Oh yeah

The one that I continually butt heads with over our opposite positions on certain issues.
He doesn't mind ruining what's left of the natural areas on the planet for a select few to be able to enjoy.
I do.:light:

This is why I am doing what I am doing in the mountains. I just didn't realize how fast the development is actually happening and who is doing it. Yikes!!
These guys are Mexican and have a proven record of getting things done.
Yall better be takin pictures !

That little bay on the north side use to be full of clams in the 70's. Each year we went down we had to go out further to find some. It was pretty shallow for quite aways out. They would have to do a lot of dregging. I think they use to charge us $1 a day to camp there.

Yeah, lewm, I remember digging up clams with my toes in the shallows on my first trip down in 1969. I asked my old man awhile ago if he'd kept any pictures or other records of that trip or our others at the end of the 60s and early 70s. He said no he didn't, but he kind of wished he had. I'll just have to keep playing that movie in my head.

As far as some of are concerned, Baja doesn't start until El Rosario. I remember Rosarito when the hotel was just about all that was there. Those days are long gone. Just keep moving south, fellas!

It wasn't all that long ago that San Quintin was a simple two lane road all the way through with nothing but dirt on each side... now look at the traffic lights and wide six lane through there!

It is happening, and it will continue to happen at a faster pace. The only current 'hope' for those opposed to it is that it is done in an environmentally respectfull way that honors the locals. What I never read too much about is significant/material actionable counter ideas that take into account the reality of my first sentence (if you doubt it.....you need to cut back on your libation consumption). What about getting serious about getting together and securing a couple of 'our ideal locations' (read the nasty 3 letter "buy" word) and 'develop' our own earth/people friendly locations. If you doubt that this is one of the few ways that we will have these places left for the locals and our visiting future generations to utilize and enjoy....again I refer you to my first sentence.

The 'end' of the isolation began in 1973 with the completion of the highway. A whole different type of visitor to Baja arrived and in greater numbers than those of us in our Jeeps and Buggies.

The next phase was the new graded roads being built (Gonzaga, San Francisquito, Tortugas, etc.). These are all needed items to serve the growing local population.

Baja is attractive and next to the U.S., thus we go. You can't blame the local land owners for wanting a piece of the pie. It is just a fact of time.

El Requeson was my favorite place to camp (1966, 1976, 1985) on Concepcion. If it goes, then I find another place. The other side of the bay has a lone dirt road and offers possibilities.

The saving factor to prevent development has been lack of water, lack of labor, cost of power generation, distance to a bank.

El Requeson is lacking the above. A worry is that the damage will be done before the eventual failure occurs. Puerto Escondido, BCS is an example.

The favorite places of our memory may vanish, but Baja is big and we will find new places to make memories at... don't give up.
