Mood: Enjoying Life with Wife In Mexico, Easy on The Easy

[*] posted on 8-8-2008 at 11:20 PM

Ok, I think I can give a clear example of why people say Canadians are cheap----When I go down to Maztalan and I have those damn timeshare people pesting me I say I am Canadian and they don't walk but run away from me:bounce::spingrin:. Now, because of this I love Canadians since they make it where I can walk around Maztalan without having these knotheads walking two blocks along with me trying to make me set an appointment to see a timeshare. Now, in baja I have met a few but nothing like in Maztalan. They do seem to stay within their groups but in fairness they all seem to travel together going down and back out. Makes since but could be mistaken by a few. Most Canadians I know do not like to say too much about Mexico as they get their medical cheaper here than Canada and usually have some deal or another going on where they stay and they will not tell you what that deal is!! Again, they are taking care of business in each and every way. Later-------------- bajafun777

As a Canadian who spent 10 years in Texas, I can say that Canadians are generally much more cost conscious than the average American. There is a very simple reason...

To you Americans...take your salary... now cut 30% off of it...now... double the taxes you pay... you now have a Canadian take home pay. Lets see how well you can live on it.

Being a little more globally savvy, I've tried hard to not be the typical CFC (Cheap F*(*# Canadian), but it is difficult.

Exactly! That's been my experience also. You want to hear a Yank whine, talk to one who's traveling in Canada and paying the prices we pay for items.

Doc,
Thanks for the lesson on politics and etiquette:lol:

My point is that those whiner republicans in Canada are called conservatives...

I have tended to respect conservation on many levels of the application of that concept....monetarily and ecologically to name a few. But I vote more liberally:light:

My reaction to your comment initially was reactive in that, as a Canadian, I don't like to sit back when I hear such generalizations....maybe like you probably don't want to hear Americans described as gun-toting, war-mongering, imperialist, etc.

So, next time you whine about the other whiners, think about how you do it.

A very nice family from Canada..................

came in and we talked a bit over dinner. They complained of high gas prices at home but were happy about the exchange rate.

They were very generous and the kids had great manners.
Baja was not mentioned.

Now cmon folks let's not stereotype.

Eh! What the heck. We are a puritan, Calvinistic nation of saver and survivors. We are not usually greedy nor big consumers by nature. A penny saved is a penny earned...etc. Give us a break...eh.

VERY true---love Canada and love traveling there---have driven back to the postcard pretty Prince Edward Island, all the way north through the beautiful Yukon, and out to the Freedom road and Bella Coola, and more.

And yes, we whined to ourselves about the prices---a lot, but the beauty and most the people made it worth the money.

I said MOST the people because you can't like everyone everywhere.

No offense really their penny pinching is amazing.

Over the last twenty years at the end of winter season in Mexico, we gather around to say goodbye to the part timers who return to the north. Each year we all agree that we will not make the mistake of allowing the Canadians to freeload off us again due to heavy cost and financial burden, they appear friendly and kind but their ulterior motives quickly become apparent. They hang around until you see they are hungry and thirsty of course its awkward to eat in front of others so we are obliged. And hey you think no big deal.

The average Canadian in Mexico never reciprocates and returns the favor afterwards. We learned our lesson. They take and take. On the other hand there is nothing wrong with inviting guests and not expecting anything in return. Thats fine. But repeated burdensome visits get old.

The Mexicans complain about the Canadians arguing about the cost of one tomato or an onion. When you ask them to contribute they bring old rotting fruit or canned food and nothing to drink yet they drink all our beer.

I do like my canadian friends however there is something about their style and interaction in mexico that makes them a burden on everyone else and they have no problem with it.

I believe this is due to prejudice. Not prejudice against Canadians but Canadians prejudice toward others. They believe they are less suited to pay their way than others. They are under the impression that others have an easier time paying for them than they do and they are happy to take advantage of anyone they can.

Oh and worse when you are selling something we run and hide from Canadian campers who want to buy they will always try to ask can we try it and use it and then decide, can we pay only half now, can we just borrow it for a while then you can sell it. I have lost countless items to my Canadian "friends" and then when you ask for it back, they can't find it?

It is more likely they are smart enough to know how to take advantage of others, or they know they have to do it to survive where as that would never occur to others or be the style of mexicans who have less.

It really is a cultural phenomenon that unfortunately divides us into groups, we are very cautious about canadians who approach our camp because of the negative financial impact on the rest of us. Lets say you have a budget of $10,000 for 6 months of camping. Your budget will be largely impacted by Canadians if you allow it. Kudos for Canadians for being so savvy at freeloading, unfortunately their penny pinching ways are quickly forgotten when they are reaching into your cooler for another cold one.

And do not get me started on French Canadians... Savoir faire is everywhere.

I gotta hand it to

you Gnukid, your description of canadians is exactly how I would describe all the Illegals we have mooching off us in Arizona.

It's amazing they are so close in their cultures.

Gnu,
This might not be an issue regarding Canadians as much as your choice of friends:spingrin:

Each year you make the same promise and fail to keep it....hmmmm, must be a Canadian at fault there.....eh?

Your post spews so much ignorant generalizing, it's best I spit out the bait.:lol:

Anyway, I am sorry but frankly dealing with penny pinching freeloaders is a frustrating circumstance in Baja and I guess the post struck a nerve with me and others. I am sorry to have come to this conclusion but it is the conclusion we have come to in the region where I visit. We have been burned too many times to not be aware of cultural differences which some people take advantage of, however I do respect some peoples ability to travel on a limited budget.
