There is a guy in San Lucas selling used, 8x40 shipping containers for "offices and casas." Join 3 or 4 together "for a wonderful living space!" He paints them a pretty sky blue on the outside. Heck, he says they even cut windows into it for an extra fee. Why didn't I think of that? During the summer, it would be just like living in Stalag 17! :light:

Some friends were over this evening and I showed the pics , just for a laugh you know ....

And the point was brought up that this casa is less than one hundred yards from the KaKaMo ( our lovely open sewage ponds on the dunes) that it was probably really nice inside and will have extensive air treatment so they don't have to smell the scheiss

The odor can be strong at times ....

The building is what it is, and EVERYbody is allowed to have an opinion (especially if a Nomad) as to what emotions the picture of this habitation brings out in them. It could even be entertaining to ponder or try to read the thoughts of the owner and the architects. I, personally, wouldn't build a thing like this, woudn't buy one, heck, I wouldn't even live in one if it was offered to me for free. But, with all due respect, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???
Indeed it must be pretty nice inside, and once inside, you can make the outside go away, smells and all.
I understand hurricane shutters and protection for glass windows and doors during chubascos, and burglaries of uninhabited rich dude's homes have been a plague recently in the gringo side of Todos Santos, but to me, in my humble opinion, the design to address these issues begs to be ridiculed...

A neighbor in Las Tunas told me of his plans to have a 24' metal container ''buried'' next to his house and he was going to use it as an office, or something. I thought the idea was a little different but not all that odd. There are alot of odd things about Baja -- a buried container isn't at the top of this list.

Isn't this post really about gossip? And poking fun at someone else's sense of style and taste?

A second thought about a ''funny'' looking home might be a wasted thought.

Are ''odd'' homes not allowed in Todos?

Hey, Amir! Que pasa, hombre? How's that house?

Lee ,

Those are good words to think about ....

As to the burried container, I believe if you could get six or eight feet of dirt over it the cooling costs would be cut in half or more !

Poking fun? Why, what's wrong with that?
And gossip? Let me tell you what I heard about some other "odd" homes in Todos Santos. And while I'm at it, I'll tell you about Amir's casita: He should have followed his own rules...
To summarize, there is a Spanish saying that says it all: "Lo barato sale caro." But we're healthy and happy and ready to move in as soon as the floor sealer cures in a few days...

By the way, cool new avatar, Lee. And you also CaboRon.

I'm showing my lack of Spanish. What's it mean? Someone?

AND, David M, ''El Maestro'' created the avatar. What a guy! Sure glad he's here.

So, Amir, since we're discussing homes, etc., don't think you've written much about it and your process. Smooth as gravel? Problems that you laughed at? What would you do different?

We're going to be drinking at Hotel California next January -- Ron too!

And you're right. Nothing wrong with poking fun at people in BCS. Everybody does it.

I'm down with that....

Have always liked the Hotel California ....

BTW. It seems Frank's is open in a limited fashion ....

Asked for Frank and the help said he was back in the US,

And they are not serving breakfast .... just burgers .

Quality seems to be a real issue when Frank is not in attendance.

You can never seem to get good help, especially when they are the inlaws

Hey, that's a lot of questions and I don't want to hijack this thread; although CaboRon probably would like nothing better...

Anyway, the whole thing is a long story; at least a 3 or 4 Pacifico story... Bring your violin and some handkerchiefs...

And some people deserve to be poked fun at - there are a lot of eccentrics down here... I'm one of them...:lol::lol:

I was watching the San Diego State/Notre Dame football game today and at halftime they did a story on a Notre Dame student who started a school project that has turned into a business where he turns old Conex's into homes for the needy in Mexico. The story stated there are literally thousands of these containers that are just sitting around gathering dust. They sure don't look all that comfortable, but for people who have been used to living on dirt floors with cardboard walls and roofs, they would certainly be a step up. I haven't seen any in my travels, but it would be great to seem them in use throughout the country.

Had to Google "Conex" and it is a military expression for shipping containers .... I have seen them used in a self-storage yard, as deliverable on site offices and many other applications. Gotta be like an oven in the summer .

I saw a home near San Luis Obispo last year built out of those old shipping containers. The owners used about 15-16 of them and made a pretty cool looking/modern design place with an ocean view to boot. They completely insulated the inside walls/ceilings and told me that the multi level 4 bedroom house with about 2400 sq ft and great roof deck cost them around $125K completely finished. You can get quite creative with them...

A couple of years ago they busted one of my neighbors in Oregon for growing pot in a buried container. They showed pictures of the inside and it had grow lights all along the ceiling.

A buried container does not show external heat on infrared from the lights.

NEW PICS

Just took a couple of update shots this morning.

As you may have noticed this casa is part of a set of three.

A sort of archetecual statement by designer Sylvia St. Clair

Here the lovely home at the other end of the lot.

Make of it what you will
