Doug, thanks for the cleanup
Yesterday there was a bit of a "dust-up" here over a post that I found offensive and profane.
I requested, nicely, that the author might want to clean it up a bit, which got me a load of scorn from several.
Surely that would have been the easy solution, short of that a brief discussion with Doug and the thread was brought into conformity of the rules of
the board.
Lately the board has seriously slipped into realms that many of us original folk never thought we would see. Sad to say.
And, even sadder, many of our really quality posting partners have simply checked out.... do a little sleuthing and you will note the good quality
folk who are missing.
Let's hope that the negatives and the sniping, and the really low quality of some posting can be eliminated.
Speaking of elimination, am I the only one that is offended by posts which have vivid color renderings of piles of feces?
Is this really something that we want cluttering up our site?
Just wondering....

The focus needs to be on Baja or Baja Nomad members... Baja is the reason people joined this forum and then many of us have made friendships from the
association.
With events of the past year and economic slowdown for some, Baja trips have been fewer than in the past... perhaps why less trip reports or stories
of interest?
In their place people have been posting 'news stories' that either are quite negative, have nearly nothing to do with Baja travel/ destinations, or
are not about Baja at all.
A few of us have been guilty of posting non-Baja photos, but as long as they are of quality and interest or involve Nomads... little harm I hope is
done... like sharing an event with a family member... and we all love Ken Bondy's underwater photos no matter what ocean they were taken in!
To keep the Baja interest alive, on my part... I have added stuff to spur interest in Baja's historic past or to encourage travel south with links to
my photos of interesting sites.
The important thing is to keep it as positive and happy as possible, I think. Sure, if we personally know of a negative event and want to warn our
fellow Nomads... great and thanks! But to post stories about drug cartel crimes in other parts of Mexico... just what is it you want to happen to the
people of Baja with that stuff? They benefit from our trips south... will repeated bad news about Mexico help the people of Baja?
Here was our last trip to Baja... and some photos from the previous year's trip to the same spot, plus links: http://vivabaja.com/508

Well, without doing an exit survey to find out why those quality posting partners checked out, I don't see how you can draw any conclusions as to why
they left.
There are a whole gamut of alternative theories, such as maybe they left because every time they came here the lights were on but nobody was home...if
you get my drift. Or, they left because they became disillusioned with the Baja myth.
You need to add some empirical evidence to support your claims. Correlation does not imply causality.

We had a thread like this last week. It doesn't get better. Doug eventually locked that one. I say lock this now before there are 10 pages of this.
DavidK's post is nice but the other 2 are just more down hill drivel.

You decide that its not okay for them to post images but then you post descriptions? You are a hypocrite. You not only resurrected the post you
claimed to be offended by you drag the whole thing out of context. Could you please be more considerate to the original posters ad to others like me
who are offended by gross descriptions as much as hypocritical crap?

Sure, lock it up, delete
everything you personally find offensive, censor every topic. Just feed us what you think we should be reading, the truth doesn't matter as long as
it's not offensive to a privileged few.

Duh, this is not People's Park at Berkeley. It's a message board, run by a private citizen who can decide what he wants and what he doesn't. Just like
any newspaper, magazine, TV station, radio station, etc. The owners decide what is said.

I agree, Lets let Doug decide and not some pompous know it all who seems to think she runs the board herself.
The problem with the board these days is that all the old school "original members" have no consideration for any new posters.
I can not stand redundant road reports and plant or critter ID but never say to censure them. Same goes for pictures of anything from dogs to kids to
the meal of the week .
I want real info and real reports on the dangers now lurking for Baja and Mexican travel as I drive up and down every month. Those who would shut this
info down are fools.
If this offends. Do not read it.
The board is as vibrant and as healthy as its ever been.
The advice I am about to give you is worth what you are paying for it.

Quote: | I could be wrong, Ron, but from my understanding, you are not in America, and freedom of speech is much curtailed all over Mexico. You are living in a
different country, and you can't claim righteous Americanism. If you want freedom of speech in Mexico, you'll probably find it at the U.S. Emabassy.
I could be wrong on this one too, but the board appears to be published in Mexico, somewhere in the central time zone. This I presume is so because
the board's time clock is one hour later than Pacific Time. Either that, or the time change never took effect on the board's computer. AND, I will
humbly stand corrected if told differently by the board's senior members. |

Gee palmeto99, so all you want to have on this board is "real reports and dangers for Baja and Mexican travel'? Surely there is some other board that
is more to your liking than this. I'm all for your wanted info, but this board is about all the "other" subjects you seem to have a problem with.,as
well.As you said, if you are offended, don't read.In the meantime, we will continue to share our experiences and love for Baja and plants, critters,
dogs, and even food,as long as this board shall live!!It's about life in Baja, and it is all that and more.

I have heard LOTS of nomads, new and old comment they are not happy with the direction the board has taken over the last couple months. It is not so
much the negative news stories but the flaming insults and personal attacks that follow. Most people just do not want to take the chance of being
insulted or attacked and many newer nomads are just plain intimidated by the agressive "newbies".
News is fine, and important as it pertains to baja travel & living. But IMHO all the narco violence news gets old and now if we open up this baja
board to ANY mexican news...well it may get overwhelming as some new members are hell bent on only posting only these items.
The sad thing is that these members who are intimidated and have thrown in the towel...they wont post to defend their views for fear of retribution.
Thus we are getting a one sided view of the direction the board has taken...from the news hounds newbies prospective.
For those who wish to keep abreast of all the bad mexican news, I suggest perhaps you subscribe to another forum and get your fill.
Or, if it truly is the wish of the majority of members and the owner...maybe the peace, love and fish tacos needs revising to a new mantra and I'll
just go to the beach.
This board is not IMHO as vibrant and healthy as it has ever been and it's sad to see so many nomad amigos retreating.
This comment/observation/opinion is not meant to be pompous and I do not wish to run the board...but am simply providing another prospective and
opinion since that is what seems to be happening in this thread.

Unknown to Shari and a few others who tend to deal with their own personal perceptions as if they are realities, there are ways to prove that Shari,
and others who agree with her, are dead wrong. There is a little secret place on the internet that gives those who know where to look the real
numbers. The activity on the Baja Nomads message board has increased steadily over the past three years. There is absolutely no indication of any
dropping off of members or activity. Here are some figures, based upon a snapshot in time:
11/20/2005 - 71.39 posts per day
10/24/2006 - 87.55 posts per day
8/23/2007 - 107.49 posts per day
8/18/2008 - 125.21 posts per day
11/20/2005 - 7.97 replies per thread
10/24/2006 - 8.76 replies per thread
8/23/2007 - 9.92 replies per thread
8/18/2008 - 10.78 replies per thread
As you can see, posting activity has increased 16% over the past year, and 75% over the past 2-3/4 years. I am sure that the board owner can verify
these figures, they come from his own records.
