Parrot?
Had a visitor this morning, a gray parrot. But apparently not an African Grey. Aside from gray, it had red cheeks and top knot feathers kinda like a
c-ckatoo. We weren't sure if it was someone's escaped pet or? When it left, it flew very well so it didn't have clipped wings. Any birders out
there know what it was? This is desert on the border, never seen one of these around here before. Sorry about the photo, I don't have a zoom lens,
just a point and shoot.

Your photo did not come through, but by your description it sounds like it might have been a grey c-ckatiel?

Yeah, I think that's it, either female or immature as it didn't have a yellow face. Since they're from Australia, not Mexico, it probably was an
escaped pet.
Still can't get the picture in here. No clue why.

c-ckatiels often will fly away from their owners even while seemingly quite content. They are small and very light. So even with their wings clipped
they can still manage to get airborne and fly away. Very adept at whistling whole tunes in perfect pitch. Rarely, some may even manage a few words.

Oso,
If you think it might come back, you might keep a towel handy to throw over it so you can catch it before it flies away again. Someone might be
looking for it.
They're cute little birds. I used to have one.

The file size limit to attach a file here is about 50k or so, be sure the image is smaller in size. The board may also be at its limit for
attachments. It is a burden on the admin to not only maintain all the files and accounts but also files. So if you can its best to use another service
such as picasa.google.com or flickr.com upload there and use the bbcode links for img to include them here.

It was about 15 feet up in a Guaje tree, don't think the towel would have worked.

Nope, won't work.
We had a c-ckatiel land on the top of our school playground equipment one year. I climbed up high enough to throw a sweatshirt over it. The kids all
made Lost and Found signs that we put up in the neighborhood. It ended up making a nice classroom pet.
I can't imagine you climbing that Guaje tree though, so don't think I was suggesting that you play Tarzan!

You live in the San Luis right? I was born and raised in Yuma (go Criminals). You might of seen a female Phainopepla , though the red cheek thing
isn't a fit.

Right, and no I don't think so, It had red cheeks, the crest wasn't that thick-more like a few feathers and it bigger than sparrow size- almost
pigeon size,

I think we spotted an escaped parrot the other day at the San Diego swap meet. Two birds flew over and laughed!! We all looked up amazed, but am
sure it was the birds. A very human laugh, though. Pretty cool!. H.

The golfcourse I played in Sacramento had a substantial flock of parrots that made it their home. No idea where they came from, but since frost is
rare and never severe, and fruit and nut trees abound in the area, they should have no trouble surviving. But, nevertheless, strange to hear that
tropical screeching that far north.
