Hurricane Norbert
The big storm has come and gone. Baja Sur has survived. The winds
horrific and rains heavy. But now the winds are gone and the waters
are subsiding and life goes on.
The roads ARE open. During the deluge Highway 1 was underwater
in a multiciplicity of places. It happens. That was then. This is now.
A lot of mud is beings shovelled out of homes. But the homes are still
there.
Power was out for a while. There is power throughout.
There is water.
Most of all there are the people.
Massive demolition? Massive destruction? No!
The people who say there was....they were never here.
we are here.
We know better.

Hurricane Norbert kills 4 in northern Mexico
The Associated Press
Monday, October 13, 2008
MEXICO CITY: Authorities say at least four people were killed by Hurricane Norbert when it ripped through northern Mexico over the weekend.
Sonora state social development secretary Hector Clark said Monday that the bodies of two men and two women were found Sunday after they were swept
away by a rain-swelled river in the town of Alamos.
Norbert hit mainland Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane with winds near 85 mph (140 kph) after crossing the Baja California Peninsula.
The storm uprooted trees, tore roofs from homes and caused widespread flooding before dissipating over the northern mountains of mainland Mexico.

Alamos got hit very hard. The BBP has arranged a relief mission and several planes and at least one chopper have signed up. they are leaving from phx
area primarily on Fri and looking for donations of food clothing or cash.
There is major damage and loss of personal belongs for the people of Alamos. we will be putting together a relief flight to provide support to those
that have lost homes and / or loved ones to Hurricane Norbert. Needed are cloths, jackets, blankets, blue tarps, shovels, brooms, and anything else
that could be needed in this effort. Jim indicated that things donated would be taken into the Hacienda where they will be sorted and provided to the
needy. We are setting this Friday, October 17 as the flight day. If you can participate, plan on arriving Alamos around 2:00 P.M. Special arrangements
are being made so there will be no problem with Customs if you check in at Cd Obregon. Lodging will be provided on Friday night for those working the
airlift. Jim will give us a list of food to bring down so that it can be prepared for us. He has the means to cook but food is very limited. In
addition, we are asking for money. If you cannot make the flight in which each participant will have to pay for his own fuel and donations, we are
asking that cash donations be made. If you can participate either by picking up and / or delivering relief supplies or, by providing cash for fuel for
those that do, please contact the BBP office.

Thanks for the pictures Hook. Obviously not everyone come away from Norbert unscathed. I want to thank all of you for your updates during the storm.
They were very informative and at times emotional. Glad you all made it out in pretty good shape.

from the BBP, by El Jefe
just got back from Alamos today (Sunday) at about 2:00 P.M. After get a 24 hour sleep, will be posting a complete and full report including photos….
However, the short of it is that we had 31 aircraft come down landing Alamos on Friday over an 8 hour period. Alamos for that one day was
International and we had DGAC, Customs, and Immigration present. All offical fees were dropped i.e. landing, parking, Visas, etc. Ten were
turn-around (dropped off their donation and departed either back to the States or else where and twenty one did an over-night at Alamos. Aircraft
ranged from 172's to a Cessna jet all involved in bringing down about 11 tons of supplies.
The BBP started this Airlift on Tuesday when the need was determined and put out the call for help. I arrived on Thursday to set up the Tower and
Ground control and, as other BBP Members arrived on Friday, all jumped in to help unload aircraft, sort clothing, and assist in delivering the
supplies to the barrios that were in the most need.
It must also be pointed out that this relief Airlift was for the people who lived in and near the Village of Alamos. Jim & Nancy Swickard have
opened up their resort for us to use by providing rooms and meals for all that worked the Airlift. In addition, his kitchen is providing over 1,000
meals a day to those that have lost their homes to the floods created by Hurricane Norbert.
There is no way that we can thank all who supported this effort but we will try. There will be a full report forthcoming.
by the way, the Cessna Citation was by a phx flying sams member and owner of an NFL franchise.

and this from a greatful couple
One of the few times in my life I am truly at a loss for words. To be able to express my gratitude, and the gratitude of the hundreds who lost
everything, the BBP airlift to Alamos was an overwhelming success.
I am sure Jack will have a comprehensive update after returning to the U.S. regarding the past few days and the smiles, tears, joy and sorrow which he
too saw on so many faces. Each of you who flew down, those who contibuted for fuel, those who donated items.....you have made a difference.
Many Thanks....once we get back to normal I will try to send each of you a note. Our fly-in is on for November 12-16 and it will be better than
ever....truly.
