Driving to San Felipe

Haven't driven into Baja since late 90's. What paperwork will I need to get in and back on a short visit to San Felipe? Have passport, car registration, driver's license, Mex insurance. Car isn't paid for yet so no pink slip. Do I need anything else? What hassles might I expect? Are "morditas" still a big thing if I'm not in TJ or Ensenada? How's Mexicali for crossing?

Is there a senior Nomad hangout,
Also, will I be able to bring a cooler of frozen shrimp back?

Sounds like you got it covered!

Never take a pink slip with you... selling a car in Mexico is a big no no, and that is what will be presumed if you have the pink slip onboard.

No hassels... only the military checkpoint at the Hwy. 3 (Ensenada road) junction just over 90 miles south of Mexicali. They are looking for drugs, guns, ammo... Don't have any on you! If they stop you (usually only when northbound), they will usually ask "where you coming from/ donde viene?" and/or "where you going/ donde vas?" A search is typical when northbound. They look under seats, in glovebox, etc. No big deal if you are a good boy!

Mexicali is fine for crossing... the route for San Felipe is very well signed. If your stay is no more than 3 days, then no need for a Tourist Card. The San Felipe tourism folks claim the card (FM-T) is not needed for up to a week stay... as they want the visitors to come south easily! IF you are going south of San Felipe or staying longer than the 3 days, an FM-T (Tourist Card) is available just inside the border at the INM Office. Up to 7 days is free, over 7 days and up to 180 days is about US$20... which must be paid to a bank teller, then a return to the INM office for a final stamp... Now, that is a hassle... specially if the nearby bank teller is closed!

There is NO immigration checkpoint anywhere in the northern state of Baja Calif., it is just a legal formality and good to have should you get into trouble/ accident, etc.

Here's a San Felipe area sunrise for you to enjoy!:

Also, there are a few new things to be aware of

1. There is quite a bit of construction at the intersection near Costco as there is a new overpass being built. There is a way around it by taking the road behind Costco(turn when you see the Tecate sign)

2. All US Citizens are now required to stop in SF and drop off a 6 pack of Tecate to me!!

Thanks, David for the info. You hear so much misinformation since 9/11. What's your take on the shrimp? I can't come home without some.

san felipe

hi 4cata

http://www.sanfelipe.com.mx/

shrimp season is on,, so no problem bringing some back,, take a look at the san felipe web site, most of the restruants and bars now have wif-fi,, not all,, but the popular ones,
the last few years we have been staying down town at the El Capitan Motel,, is has a restraunt and bar, you can leave your car there and walk down town, as some times parking is a pain,, you might want to check out a popular bar on the Malicon,, Bar Miramar,, great views on the patio,, its very popular with the expats living in san felipe

Last time I was there, two years ago, there was an internet shop (20 pesos per hour) across from the above referenced El Capitan motel.

And this is the best time of year for the biggest shrimp in San Felipe. It sounds wonderful about now. Our days are getting cooler and the nights even moreso. Winter is on the way. Love those sunrises over el Mar de Cortez. Let's all go!!!
