Good Wi-Fi, Bad Wi-Fi
l I finally got a laptop and have tried to get online in a few Baja locations. The first was a cantina-- Bahia Cantilles, which is about 10miles south
of Rosarito Beach. With the help of Nick who gave me the secret code, the access was easy, and the speed was fast. I`ve been back and I tell you, if
you have a laptop, and want to surf the net, this place is great (hard to see the keyboard though with the poor light).
Then there was (is) the La Salina marina. I got my username and password, and got connected. But what for? To load a page in 15 minutes? I think we
should get a list of good Wi-Fi locations in Baja.
Oh yeah, FYI, whenever you give a free plug to Bahia Cantilles, you get a free beer on Nick!!!!

McD's on Reforma at Walmart/HDepot center south of Ensenada WiFi is good and free. But, the coffee, smoothies and servers at D'Volada 1/4 mile north
and on east side are a much better value. 
Internet cafe's on their pc's are also a good option throughout baja at approx 10 pesos/hour.
Trying to remember which Nomad is producing a baja map with this stuff, food, lodging, etc.

LosFrailes-- Free of course. Why pay when so many are offering it? I was on the road recently and noticed there was free WiFi everywhere, from state
welcome centers (Nevada) to restaurants to laundromats and every motel with a billboard.
PS- I love my laptop! Got it on Ebay for $325.

The Cactus Motel offers it-
Antonio at the Baja Cactus motel in El Rosario offers it if you drop in and say you are a BajaNomad member.
And when traveling in California, we check mail at any Best Western Motel in the parking lot. Have never found one that needed a pass code.
Things are expensive, but at least we get a free trip around the sun once a year

Being relatively new to the wi-fi scene, I learned on the fly in La Paz, May 2008. A couple things I noticed was...once I went to a wi-fi spot and
logged on with their password, the next time I was near there, my laptop picked it up automatically. I wouldn't necessarily have to go get the latte
to login. I spent MANY MANY hours at the Cafe Exquisito in El Centenario, and I don't know if they were put in for this reason, but I plugged in to
their electrical outlets to keep things humming while sitting and sipping my $1.50 bottle of water for 4 hours.
I've also noticed while traveling in more populated areas that there are many times my laptop will pick up a signal from an unsecured network. I have
logged on to view emails and other non-security sensitive type surfing on many occassions. I would NEVER suggest making purchases or even checking
bank account balances on any type of unsecured or public network. At home, I use my laptop via wireless to surf while hubby is doing his thing on our
main computer. We have it security enabled (and we live out in the Sticks!) but I still use the main computer connected via cable to the router for
purchases involving a CC.
We watched a TV news show (60 Minutes or similar) about public computers in hotels. Hackers can put a small device into one of the USB ports in the
back of the hotels "Guest Use" computers that records ALL of the information guests do on the computer including CC numbers, bank account numbers, PIN
numbers....
I would strongly suggest that if you have to make a purchase from a public computer, try to call the company and give them the CC number personally.
May not always be an option in MX.
On a lighter note...I did enjoy all the various network names that would show up... including one called "Idiota Pendejo"... (hope the spelling is
right)

There sure is!! And may be the best yet!
It is the Cantina at La Salina, unsecured and FAST!! And you don`t even need to remember your laptop. They have a desktop sitting there for anyone to
use!
So go sit outside on their patio, watch the sun set, sip a drink and surf away!

"Michigan man arrested for using cafe's free WiFi from his car
I was not aware of this…..
A Michigan man is being prosecuted for using a cafe's free WiFi... from his car. Sam Peterson was arrested under a Michigan law barring access to
anyone else's network without authorization, according to Michigan TV station WOOD. Since the cafe's WiFi network was reserved for customers, and
Peterson never came into the cafe, he was essentially piggybacking off of the open network without authorization.
The arrest came about because Peterson apparently showed up to the Union Street Cafe to use its free WiFi from the comfort of his car, and he did so
every single day. A police officer grew suspicious of Peterson and eventually questioned him as to what he was up to. Peterson, not realizing that
what he was doing was (at least) ethically questionable, told the officer exactly what he was doing. "I knew that the Union Street had WiFi. I just
went down and checked my e-mail and didn't see a problem with that," Peterson told a reporter.
Under Michigan's "Fraudulent access to computers, computer systems, and computer networks" law, Peterson's actions could result in a five-year felony
and a $10,000 fine. However, prosecutors do not plan to throw the book at him, as they don't believe that Peterson was aware he was even breaking the
law. Instead, he will pay a $400 fine and do 40 hours of community service, and the arrest will not go on his record.
Coincidentally, the cafe owner that Peterson was leeching WiFi off of didn't even realize that what Peterson was doing was a crime at the time.
Neither did the police officer. "I had a feeling a law was being broken, but I didn't know exactly what," Sparta police chief Andrew Milanowski told
the TV station.
This is not the first time someone has been arrested for piggybacking on a WiFi connection. In 2005, a Florida man was arrested and hit with a
third-degree felony for surfing an open WiFi network from his SUV. Similarly, an Illinois man was arrested in 2006 for, again, using an unsecured WiFi
network from his car. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was given one year's court supervision and a $250 fine. A Washington man was also arrested
in 2006 for parking outside of a coffee shop and using the open WiFi connection without purchasing anything. And just earlier this year, an Alaska man
was arrested for using the WiFi network from the public library after hours to play games from—you guessed it—his car in the parking lot.
Whether or not you agree with the legality of using an open WiFi network without the owner's authorization, one thing is painfully clear: if you're
going to leech, try not to do it from a parked car right in front of the building."

The Law and Wi-Fi.
State and Local laws are all over the place regarding this Poaching. I saw a segment on the news a short while back where one instance of the
freeloading was a "Stranger" pulling into people's driveways and using their connection. In that jurisdiction there was NO law, including
traspassing, that the guy could be prosecuted for. As time goes by, the laws will catch up, but a major stumbling block is the question of whether or
not you're "Stealing" an unencrypted signal.
BTW, your "Windows" OS laptop will "remember" any connection that you have used, showing it on the list of available networks.
