Tijuana cartel war over
The buzz is that the war is over, no more nasty executions in public, decapitations, etc. Apparently the two factions where given an ultimatum by the
federal goverment, stop, or military death squads will be unleashed to clean out both sides for good. Members of organized crime have been given
orders to stop gruesome killings, and warned by their bosses that those that do not respect orders, will be severely punished.
Looks like the region might be in for some calmer days.

Mexican military death sqauds.... are you sure you didn't get this story mixed up with Star Wars storm troopers? In the face of the threat of
Martial Law- the narcos have suddenly reformed themselves? It would be about as peaceful as Israel and Hamas during their cease fires, IMHO. There
is no trust, and will be no trust. Why would there be?
Even if true, it only turns the clock back a year to when Calderon declared war on the narcos- without understanding how deep the corruption problem
was or that there were not enough willing, honest men to take on and win the fight. It does nothing to resolve the underlying problems.
Besides, it's just too late for a meaningful truce to save Mexicos economy (even if it was done at 100% success)when the economic factors (including
the peso) are tied so close to security factors. The narcos were only one-half the criminal activity (the other half is the non-narcotics extrortion
and kidnappings rings). It's also too late because the world has moved on to more serious problems than anything that happens in Mexico right now.
Serious geo-political-economical problmes that make Mexico look like oz in comparison.
Stoppin crime is necessary, but in itself can't pull Mexico out of it's death spiral. The economic pressure from job losses and the peso devaluations
will cause crime to increase. It'll be like telling the gladiators of Rome to take a month off while the people leave the stadium to fight it out in
the streets.
On the Mexican news they interviewed TJ cab drivers upset that the price of gas went UP by 40 pesos this week while going down stateside.
We are all getting fleeced. All Airlines now have fuel prices a fraction of what they were last summer- but no relief from those "fuel surcharges" or
"baggage handling fees" is in sight. Same for the"increased transportations costs" that were used to justify food price increases. Prices go up
fast- and come back down slowly if at all.

If true, it would be good news. I always felt like Calderone naively walked up to a hornet's nest and smacked it with a baseball bat. What did he
expect?

Huh?
Why weren't the military death squads unleashed in the beginning? Why doesn't Calderon want to clean out the drug cartels for good?
Does this mean the cartels are now allowed to go about their business unhindered by the authorities?

Looks like the region might be in for some calmer days. | Jesse, respectfully....all this says to me is that
the Government condones the cartels. I personally don't believe "peaceful co-existence" is possible. Any thoughts on why the Feds issued this
ultimatum/warning, rather than simply having "unleashed military death squads to clean out both sides for good"? There is a HUGE economic incentive
for a certain portion of the population to perpetuate illegal drug activity & the trickle-down effect benefits a larger population, tainted money
or not. I know, if you need $$ to feed & house your family, the source is irrelevant to many.
As opposed as I am to drugs & all the negative downstream effects they perpetuate, I'm not foolish enough to believe that illegal drugs will
ever be eradicated from any country on earth, so to me "for good" part of that ultimatum is ludicrous. As is attempting to impose
"rules" on illegal activity! Who in their right mind would expect the cartel to
"play nice" whether it came as an ultimatum, or with a pretty please attached?

As George W. Bush would say, Calderone misunderestimated the scope of the problem. Calderone took office being largely unliked(sound familiar?) So, it
only makes sense that there are many who would seek to undermine his presidency.

Yup. The end result will be one cartel left in charge of everything- and they will call it the Mexican Governement with its corruption and warts
intact. With oil, border tourism, the pesos and incoming remittances all down- where else will the money come from? And besides- they want and need
the drug DOLLARS, not pesos.
Mexico had two choices- to be a failed state or a narco state. It just chose the less of two evils- if this story is even true.

I'm not through reading the opinion piece that was linked above but I have been following this site http://narcotraficoenmexico.blogspot.com/ (caution, graphic at times)
since early august 2007 when my brother in law, a taxi driver, was murdered in guerrero state. I found it when I was searching for the details of his
death and it was reported here and in other places. If any drug related murders take place in TJ or anywhere else in Mexico you'll be sure to find
out about them in this blog (Spanish, called "Narcotráfico en México")

weird first i got this link http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n1005529.htm
the opinion piece but now it leads to this one http://www.oem.com.mx/elsoldetijuana/notas/n1005528.htm I guess you fixed the link? Good because I didn't see anything in reference to this
situation in the first link. but this new link described the murder to five people. I'm wondering where a reference can be found with the
encouraging news that Jesse describes.
in case you were wondering the poster that this is directed to deleted their post.

I think the cartels already embraced the fish tacos - just need to work on the peace and love part . . .
