yesterday we got 13.72 to one dollar at the mulege bank
wow
thats one of the HIGHEST exchange rates we've seen
time to spend some dollars in baja
lets do some math
this summer the rate was 10 to one
that means for every $1000usa exchanged now
you get 3720 more pesos
since a quart of milk is 27 pesos
you get 137 FREE quarts of milk
gas is about 26 pesos a gallon here so
you get 143 FREE gallons of gas
my beer is 160 pesos a case of 24 so
you get 558 FREE beers

I got 13.85 at a Santander ATM last night.
At that rate, a shrimp dinner at our favorite seafood restaurant in Guaymas is 5.70.
Pescado al mojo de ajo is 4.25.
And shots of Hornitos are 2.09!!!

We think that now it's best to use pesos instead of U.S. dollars in Baja. I wouldn't be surprised if the restuarants, retailers, etc. will still be
using the 10 to 1 conversion if you pay in dollars. Right?
One more day and we are on the road!

When the dollar is going up the exchange rate at retailers tends to take its time to catch up. When the dollar is dropping they react quickly. Just a
fact and why I tell everybody to pay with pesos and not dollars. You will generally get a better deal and don't need to carry a pocket calculator.

The Pemex yesterday was giving 12.5. Of coarse I used pesos. Got 13.9 at the ATM yesterday.

Using a Santander ATM on Friday, we got 14.25.
Almost none of the restaurants over here have adjusted their prices. What's to adjust? Many food products in Sonora come from Sonora.
Going to Costco in Hermosillo on Thursday. We keep our receipts from previous trips. Many Costco products that we buy are imported. We'll see how much
those have changed.

We stopped in Mexicali on our way south on Friday afternoon and got a 13.80 exchange rate. According to my calculations after purchasing two cases of
Pacifico, the additional bottle of Kahlua was free!
On our way north of San Felipe this afternoon we saw the exchange rate at a hair over 14 at the exchange place near El Nido.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

I saw it advertised at 13.83 today in Mexicali.
I wasn't really looking too hard and hope to find it at 14 in the next day or two when I get some more pesos.
I always use pesos in Mexico. It just makes things easier for both sides of the transaction. Personally I think its a bit pretentious to use dollars
in Mexico; but, that's just my opinion and I'm sure the locals would rather have the hassle of changing dollars than nothing.

I always prefer using pesos in Baja especially when paying for services where a tip is normal. It makes it easier to figure the 20%. I use the ATM to
get the bank exchange rate.

We had most people pull out pocket calculators and use a pretty close exchange rate the last couple of weeks on our trip. I prefer using pesos, but
for some friends we deal with, I use dollars so they can play the rates to their benefit. We don't spend a lot of money at any one time except at
Pemex stations, so I try and always use dollars there.
I always feel weird using dollars in foreign countries - years ago in Ecuador, the government was converting to the dollar and there were riots!
Money is a part of culture, and I could only imagine taking my leftover pesos into Kmart in the US!! However, we did get to use our leftover pesos at
the minimart in Tecate to buy beer!
