Here is a series of photographs of a group of men who showed up at Estero Beach with a Banda back on February 10, 2002. I was staying at Estero Beach
at the time and because I love to sing Ranchera songs I asked one of the band members if I could sing El Rey. The band member pointed out the leader
of the men and said that he had contracted them and I would have to ask him. I walked over to him and asked in Spanish if he would allow me to sing El
Rey. He appeared annoyed but said if you can sing it go ahead. As depicted in the photos I sang El Rey and at the conclusion the Jefe shook my hand
and said I sang real good for a Gringo. I have no idea who they were but I did see some of the men with handguns tucked in their waistbands. They
could have been policemen and then again they could have been Narcos. Today, I probably would not do that.
I don't think even they can tell who is who in 2009. Maybe back then it was easier becuase they were still flying under the radar in the old
government. If they had visible handguns in their waistbands in 2009- that's not an official holster- and I'd suspect the worst. And who has a
visble handgun anyway- even six years ago? I'll bet they didn't put any money in your sombrero either.

I guess you could look at it two ways. Estero Beach is perhaps the most family friendly resort in the Ensenada area. Six years ago, I wouldn't imagine
the Narcos were desparate for safe haven. On the other hand, why would the cops be there. Boils down to how good they were. My bet is the Narcos would
sound better than the cops.
In 1995 I was stopped at a roadblock in the State of Chi. manned by really rough looking and acting guys with black t shirts and lots of gold
jewelry. Commenting upon their appearance to the editor of the newspaper at Nuevo Casas Grandes, he told me that the men were probably convicted
narcos who had been let out of prison under the assumption by the government that they were most likely to know who was smuggling.
An uncle of ours is a policia and he always had a pearl handled handgun tucked in the back of his pants whether he was on duty or not so yup, could
have been cops.

Yesindeedy...Could have been state cops. It was like swaggering uniform back in the 80s to have a pistol tucked into the waistband of the pants.
