But is it legal...?
I just bought a larger marine tank for my home. All of the people in "the know" say to add something called "live rock". Live rock is just about any
ol' rock that you take out of the ocean that has life on it (barnacles, algae, whatever). I am not talking about coral here - just rocks covered in
sea life.
There is a marine aquarium forum where I posted a question about just going to say, Puertocitos, and snagging about 50lbs of "live rock" and bringing
it back home to San Diego - geez...you would have thought I asked permission to shoot the Pope!
"But that's illegal!!!' they cry from Nova Scotia and Michigan!!
Well, is it? Is it illegal to haul 50 lbs of rocks from a break water in Baja?
If it is, that cool, I won't do it - but if it's legal, I can save myself $600!
Thanks

I believe t's illegal to bring into the U.S. from Mexico any live plants, sea creatures, dirt/sand, etc. without some kind of special permit - for
researchers, etc.
Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.

one call to U.S. customs will clear the situation.
Or stop by at your way down and ask in person.
On the other hand, if every Gringo visiting the Bja takes 50lbs home,
lets see: 50 X 5,000,000 = 25,000,000 lbs
The baja weights app. ?
O.K., by the year 2222 and a half the baja is flat, or the sea of Cortez is deeper than the Pacific.
(just kidden)
Fact: it is illegal to import anything agriculture / nautical etc. without going through Customs, USDA, EPA.

Yeah, I thought of that too - but there is A LOT of reef down there - and I don't think that most people are as cheap/stubborn (well, after some of
the wars that I have seen on this board - maybe as stubborn) as I am.
None-the-less, I have abandoned the idea on sound advise from another board...I will now shell out 400 bucks for a bunch of GD rocks from Tahiti!

Nova Scotia and Michigan
Don't pay any attention to the person from Nova Scotia---especially if it is a she and a member of parliment. Michigan is okay.

Live rocks
Dbrooks, I see you are in San Diego. Last time I was there, the ocean was pretty dead but there must be somewhere left along that ca. coastline with
some life left in it. Try Santa Barbara.
It is illegal to take things like that from Mexican waters but, when the authorities see what you have, they wouldn't think much of it.
The u.s. customs is a different story entirely. Just ask mr.jack!
