Virus alert...?
I've gotten a couple of E-mail alerts about incoming virus...with the return address as different Nomads....(I am sure they didn't send
them)....anyone else been seeing this?.....

On the old Amigos board
it seems that whenever I had a dis-agreement with a prominent member of that (and this) board, I would be e-mailed a virus by a third party. I did
manage to track down the source, an infrequent poster from Ensenada. It seems to have pretty well subsided now, but this will probably re-ignite it.
A pretty poor way to make your point!

Tucker, Agree. No problem here after getting rid if all old floppies, total format of new harddrive and best virus checker you can buy,all factory
software. I still get an occasional e-mail (SPAN) from the Esenada address but no virus.

These can be a nightmare to track down...
and end up causing a lot of bad blood because many of the newer strains go into the infected computer's address book and start using those addresses
as the "From" address.
Thus when someone get what appears to be an infected message from person X, it really came from person Y (unwittingly) who had X in their address
book, but now you're not speaking to X anymore because you think that he tried to poison your computer...
The wisest advice was given above. Get good anti-virus protection.

When I had that virus
(a long time ago before Norton) I had an attorney from Mexico city I had been dealing with threaten to come up here and kick my fanny if I didn't stop
infecting his computer.
I had no idea of what he was talking about until discovering I had the virus.

Herb, Too True, There was a run of that last month and the e-mails were apparantly porno in nature, I didn't get one but got accused of sending one.
But I have a seceret weapon, I do not put peoples e-mail in to address book on my email program. I have an old computer not connected to a phone
line that I put stuff in to. I have a hand written file of addresses handy, it is easy to type them when needed, if your e-mail is listed on he
internet then you will get spam and viruses sent to you. I have a e-mail address that I use when a page demands one to view the content. I check it
about once every 6 months, it sends them a mailbox full message back. If you get e-mail from a person you know and want them to quit, send them a
message Very long in 128 pica font, like about 10 bible verses, that usualy does it. If it is at all possible find out were they live and send them
everybody and anything you can!! Example, Plumbers, Electricians, Hara Krishnas etc. If you are close enough a personal visit does wonders if not try
to find some one who has a friend in that town, preferabably 6'9" 350 LBs and disagreeable. I still have a new updated daily virus checker installed.

Viruses hitch rides on emails... without the sender knowing... yes. I am moving my emails to my computer from my WebTV more and more so when I do a
group email (like to invite you guys to a Baja party) I can use blind carbon copy (Bcc) and that stops the hitchhiking of viruses. WebTV does not have
Bcc.
In a never ending smear campaign some have sent out spam or viruses from one of my email addresses... they used adderesses that I have for incoming
only email such as davidk*at*davidksbaja.com or perhaps info*at*vivabaja.com IF you get an email from one of those addresses.. it is NOT from me,
those are for incoming mail only.
Even if you get an email from my drdrip*at*webtv, vivabaja*at*webtv, or baja4me*at*msn and your virus alert warns you... do not open it and email or
u2u me asking if I sent you something.
Damaging someone's computer for any reason is dispicable and I have no time for such childish pranks by others and would never lower myself to
intentionally do the same.
Baja Nomad can be fun place for us to share our Baja advetures, memories, questions and answers... But the kiddy, prank stuff can stay at that other
board.
Oh, and yes... I was told that I got a virus attack from that Ensenada based (via New York City) web site and my web host took action. That was when I
was just on WebTV (no virus problems).

Both from Baja minded people.

I've had a virus at JPL. I asked for help from a computer support center and they told me it might have come in on my hotmail account. Apparently
the free e-mail serevices are notoriously "dirty." I've had the support center working for several days now and they can't get completely rid of it.
It's been sending e-mails out to a number of my associates. But I don't think it's on my home computer, which is the only machine I use to send
e-mail via hotmail, with a couple of exceptions. I've just ran Norton AntiVirus and it gave my home machine a clean bill of health.

David's comments about BCC's is so true. I am continually getting forwarded emails with a huge string of other peoples addresses attached.
I sure wish everyone would make sure that they delete addresses when forwarding emails. This tiny step could really reduce the potential problem.

Viruses
One way to not unintentionally be the cause of SENDING mail with a virus (by someone stealing your list of addresses) is to not use Microsoft's email
program, which is the biggest target.
www.eudora.com is a great free email program. There are others, too.
You don't HAVE to use Outlook. Some folks say Opera has a great mail program.

I looked at Thunderbird from the Mozilla group - it looked pretty good, but I had trouble trying to sort the inbound mail. Might look at Opera since
you reminded me of it.
I switched from Internet explorer to Mozilla Foxfire for my webbrowser. Like a lot of features it has. Am still learning it but was a really easy
transition . It's also free - a lot of it was taken from the Netscape code that AOL gave the Mozilla group.
