A flying Trip to Baja
A Fling Trip to Baja
Click on the URL above for photos of a Flying Trip to Baja. This is a beautiful flight from San Diego to Alfonsina's through San Felipe for customs,
immigration and flight planning.
The total trip is about 1.5 hours.....1 hour to MMSF (San Felipe Airport) and then 27 minutes to Afly's. When we drive it takes us about 10 hours but
the trip is beautiful. The drive on "That Road" south of Puertecitos is about 2.5 hours and the bird covers that in 12 minutes.
Hope you like the pictures. When you get to the gallery screen click on "slideshow" in the bottom left corner for full sized shots.

How long did it take, total time? Drive from your house to the airport, preflight, ground time in San Felipe, etc.

Trip total time
We get to the airport in 20 minutes, preflight takes 5, warmup and taxi takes about ten, flight to MMSF is always about 1:06 with no wind...wind is
usually from 325 so that is a tailwind and it sometimes the flight shorter...on the ground at MMSF we spend about 30 minutes and then it's 27 to
Alfie's....total time, door to door is about 2:40.
Going back north takes a little longer because we have to go through both Mexican and US customs etc......so we get home in about 3 hours door to
door.

Photos from five years ago
Yep...most of them are about five years old. I asked The Boss (AKA: wife) to take pictures out of the c-ckpit on most of our trips. After a
while....30+ years of flying that route...she rebelled.....we don't need any more pictures of it. So those are from my computer held files.
I got a new camera last fall and it takes some really super pictures....I posted some of these of a driving trip into Alfy's for Thanksgiving on this
site. Maybe I can convince The Boss to use it.....gonna be hard, though, it's a big sucker and she is kinda grouchy when I ask her to hold it up.
:-)
We were down there a week ago and I took some nice shots with it of a beautiful sunrise and of a trip to Papa Fernandez....I'll post some of them as
soon as I get a chance.

e Apis system
For Capt. Mike:
Nope...but will use it in March when our next flying trip is supposed to happen (according to The Boss). I have heard some guys say it works OK.
Baja Bush Pilots say it's OK. But I have a good buddy....BeerCan...who flies a BA 36 to Puertecitos say that the blasted gummiint data base includes
the wrong four letter identifiers for some airports...like Yuma where he clears US bureaucracy. Naturally the ##$@!#$DS refuse the flight plan when
you use their wrong IDs.
Just wait until these idiots decide how long you gotta wait to see a doctor!
Re your comment on the 156 Knots on the Garmin 196...thanks...I am a Knots Nut! That picture was taken by The Boss the last time she agreed to shoot
out the window. I have since replaced it with a 495 which is sweeeeeet!.....you get to see your knots in color and the thing has a fit when you get
within 500 feet of terrain that it doesn't expect and etc. etc. For a guy who got his instrument ticket with one old radio, one VOR head and an ADF
this is sure almost like cheating.
Hope you didn't notice the 196 showed me on an easterly heading and a westerly altitude...and off both by 250 feet......but that's OK in Mexico ain't
it?
Probably gonna have a new engine at annual inspection this year.....1700 hours on the old one....running good....no oil consumption and compression is
above 70 on all cylinders. But I like the feeling of new horsepower when my butt is hanging out at 12000 over the Diablo with the dark coming on.
