More on Police corruption

On Friday the 20th our contractor Tony sent his men, with a truck load of debris from our construction project, to the dump. He shortly got a phone call from one of them stating that a police officer has arrested them for illegal dumping and is demanding payment of $50 USD. According to the workers, they were stuck in the sand and off-loaded some of the concrete debris to lighten the load, (truth??). When the workers could not produce the $50 USD they were ordered to take the truck to the station outside of Cabo and to have Tony meet the officer there. When Tony arrived at the station he was met by the officer outside with Tony's truck. He demanded $500 USD or the truck would be seized. Tony had to borrow the money from his workers, whom he was about to pay, and myself, to get his truck back. I asked Tony why he didn't ask to be cited and see the judge, he stated that if he did that he would have to pay mordita to the commandante and his staff as well. I, as a retired police officer, am outraged that this hard working man was relieved of most of his profit from our project to pay off a corrupt cop. I do not and will not pay mordita as it just perpetuates the corruption problem. In this case I was helpless to do anything.

While I know that these cops regularly shake down the populace ( they have done it to me) ,

Is it just possible that they were dumping before they got to the dump ? It is a common occurance here in Todos Santos .

There was a warning in the BWO placed by someone who suggested the practice was so widespread that you might want to actually follow the workers to see if they in actually take your trash to the dump.

I am not, of course, suggesting that your workers would ever engage in this practice .

It's always something, isn't it

Is it possable you were shaken down? I have seen many bites asked for and paid and but have never seen anything near $500.00. I can't imagine if he did go to the court it would have been over $500.
I do agree with you I don't pay them either and when I insisit on seeing the judge I am usually let go with a warning.

Sound's like a 2 sided scam, not uncommon.

Could even be one-sided with no cops involved!
