Inauguration of Galeria Bahia (and birthday bash) in Asuncion

Sunday was a big day in Bahia Asuncion with the inauguration of Galeria Bahia...the first art gallery here proudly brought to you by artists Nancy & David Pridham from Creston B.C. who have been working hard on the project over the last 5 months. It is pretty much done except for the tiling and painting and panelling upstairs.
The girls got together saturday to make 150 tamales and nancy made turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams, and I made my smoked yellowtail salad for botanas and Alonso brought lamb birria.

A nice surfer couple surfaced to help out in the kitchen with party food prep

there was a nice mix of gringo visitors, Arce family and neighbours who enjoyed trying to communicate.

here are some Arces...the tamale queens

everybody drank some soda, tecates, wine and ate apetizers and got to know each other...then we started serving the food...about 65 plates in all

the cake was a 3 leches by Lupita Arce

and of course they had to do a Moridida and got their faces shoved in the cake!!

Nancy's art was appreciated...her neighbours loved the paintings of the barrio featuring them hanging laundry, painting thier casas etc.

All went very smoothly...the visitors drank, ate, chatted and most went home after cake...except the gringos who brought out the tequila...oh oh...shooters all round instigated by none other than Coloradodude.

this soon led to an empty bottle and the dancing began featuring the barrio chicas.

richard gets down and gets funky...or something

those who danced less....drank more and things got pretty silly until the tequila was gone and it was time to drive the drunks home...which was my job as I had only succumbed to one shot...it was my birthday after all.

So after finally locating the keys and the fancy new toyota, I jumped into the pilots seat of this crazy jet like vehicle...the dashboard was nuts...may have been a James bond movie on one of the several screens on the dash..and OMG, the dude's sound system was insane....so of course we had it cranked. We finally pulled out after I figured out how to put it into gear...Dude was being funny and wouldn't give me any hints....he and Jenny were stuffed into the front seat and we were off...with one stop for Jenny's ice cream.

My first err in judgement was to cruise the strip in this space ship with tunes blaring...town was all asleep (till we passed by anyway). We decided to have one last dance at the campground where people were camped from the party...hmm...nobody joined us...but luckily my psychic powers alerted me to the fact that the cops were coming...so we made a run for it and ColoradoDude wanted to ride standing up hanging onto the back bumper (second err in judgement)
So I took to the back street to avoid possible arrest and Jenny and I were belting out some 80's tune...when I noticed that the Dude wasnt on the bumper anymore...but Jenny assured me that he was on top of the roof...oh OK...so on we drove and sang...but a little voice told me to turn around and go back and look for him...good thing we did...

The Dude was staggering towards the highway and when we pulled up much to my horror, his face was covered with dripping blood....yeeee gods man...and he said he'd been attacked by a shark! or perhaps butted in the head by a narcos AK47! So we held some kleenex up to his gaping headwound so he wouldnt bleed all over his nice car....lucky I'm so thoughful eh...and stuffed him in the front just as the police pulled up to the scene of the loud dancing...a quick u turn and we sped home on the back streets...no emergency ward for these guys...they were WAAAAAY to loaded.

Instead of calling medivac, we took him home and cleaned him up...what a nursing team...Jenny blew dried his wound so the nose strips would hold it closed...what a gal.

So the party was a huge success...nobody got arrested, although we heard the next day that the cops had been looking for ColoradoDude for urinating in public...but didnt dare enter the party and drag him out....nobody went to emergency, no fights broke out, just one shark attack...everybody had fun, loved the gallery and ate cake!

Here is a link of more party pics for those interested

Shari,

Maybe I'm behind on my Nomad reading, but is this an official "Art Gallery" where the work of local artists will be available for purchase?

One more question/observation, who brings a hair drier to Baja? (Electric personal appliances are generally against the rules in our camp) ;)

Yes this is an official art gallery where Nancy's paintings and sculptures and art will be sold.

Our rule here is there are no rules...good thing she had that contraption too...it's her first baja trip so she too is catching on fast.

Seems predictible enough.
Somehow I knew it wouldn't be the license plate that attracted attention to the Dude.
Sorry to hear about his injury though.
